What is normal KLR sound when engine is braking bike?

I'm a new KLR owner, 2008 with 4k miles. Is it normal for the engine to sound as if it is lightly backfiring when you are going steep downhill and the engine is in essence braking the bike? Almost sounds like the engine is "missing" or lightly backfiring.

Sounds like it might be a bit on the lean side. the .22 cent smile maker will probably cure that issue and add a bit more throttle response to the bike.
.22 cent smile maker = two #4 stainless steel washers slid up on the bottom side of the needle in the carb. This will allow a bit more fuel to flow by raising the slide a bit. Thus giving better response and enrichening the fuel mixture. Also would suggest opening up the air mixture screw from soft seat to 2 1/4 turns give or take a 1/4 turn. This usually improves cold starts tremdously. Just my .22 cents pun intended.

Greg it is not uncommon for the 08's to sound like that because of the clean air injection on the exhaust. DX's suggestions should help but might not make it go away completely. It's nothing to worry about though. If you would like a hand making the adjustments I'm not too far away.

Thanks for the tips. I forgot to mention that this gas tank had a dose of gumout in it, since I just bought the bike and wanted to flush the carbs in the event it was needed. I'll change the spark plug out when my life settles down a bit and I feel like diving into tank removal, or I'll do it when I buy the crash bars and install them. SLO-KLR I'd love to meet you someday somewhere and go over the bike information, tip, etc. ,maybe even do the .22 cent full engine overahaul! Maybe even ride divide peak out here, or some areas up in SLO that look interesting on the topos. Here's yet another couple questions: Is the engine tuned to 87 octane and therefore you shouldn't use higher grade? (my boat engine is, and you shouldn't use higher octane according to specs). Or should I use premium anyway? Secondly, what are the best looking crash bars, for the purpose of laying the bike down now and then and not denting the tank and radiator? Thanks for all the advice.

The KLR is tuned to run on 87oct. If you hear any pinging then move up to 89oct. 91 and higher is just overkill for the KLR.

Howdy Greg, I consistently get better mileage using premium vs regular. 47 on regular, 52+ on premium. Mid-grade about 50. This at highway speeds 70+.
As for the light backfiring I still get that more at higher altitudes (9,000 and up) braking downhill before a curve.
You're gonna love the bike.

Yeah love the bike.

This new/used KLR of mine is great because you can just go explore anything you want, without limitation, on or off road. Plus I know it's built to be abused even though I am not capable of abusing it. Just driving it to work, even though it's cold right now, makes something real about the commute. Plus I don't have to listen to NPR whine about the latest thing that will surely end the world, like I did in my car. Thanks for all the help guys. I like to get into machines that I buy.
