hey, guys...I'm new to this forum (obviously), and am here to pick ya'll's brains for suggestions. I'm an avid cyclist since around 1974, so I've had a few. Never owned a KLR, but appreciated the utilitarian side of it. Have owned mostly two-strokes, from my original Suzuki T500 that I rode till the tires fell off, to Water Buffalos, to RD's and RZ Yamaha's, and even had 5 Kawasaki 750's at the same time. Dirt bikes, of course...from Hodaka's to RM250's, etc. Kawasaki's were mostly what "the other guys" had, mine were primarily the Suzi's. I now live in North Carolina (Burlington area), and have decided to get a KLR, because of that utilitarian aspect. Was even thinking of trading my '02 Honda VFR in on a new KLR, since the VFR would cost me dearly one of these days in a "125 in a 50 zone", so to speak. Problem being, since I'm into computers and research, I find Kawasaki screwed up their integrity with the new weak rings, causing the blowby at higher speeds, and the subsequent oil consumptions. I would like a new bike with all the improvements, but cannot justify tearing the new bike down to fix it right after buying it. Maybe someone out there could reassure me about the beast....thus the reason I joined here. I know KLR's have a HUGE, HUGE following, so maybe I can get my solution from you guys, and get one to satisfy my needs. I own a Yam TW200 that gets around 70 mpg, but a 650 thumper would better fit my desire for "traffic control"....and with such a huge gas tank, would be able to basically forget about it running out of gas anny time soon. I am now considering a KLR a couple years old, but in pristine shape, to avoid the oil problem, but would rather have a new one. Any help? Thanks!

08 in the first run or production were the burners I believe....end of the year production ones were better, they changed the rings I think. Personally you could get a real deal on a burner and slap in the 685 piston and rings and have the best of both worlds. But beware of oil starved top end damage...?
I would look for a really well farkled pre08 machine for cheap...they're out there! OR get a new 09 that someone decided it wasn't for him...?
