klr600 intro

hi all
recently got my hands on a first generation klr600
started stripping it as i know work had to be done on engine
so with my first post comes a first question
will klr650 barrels fit the 600?
anyway
hi all and thanks in advance
the klr joins a growing stable to fit between and hopefully in time take over from my DR600 and DL650

if the 650 barrels will fit is there anything in the swap process i need to be aware of?
thanks again

I kind of doubt that they could. The 600 is actually only a 564cc engine. The 650 is actually 651cc.
600 has a 96mm bore x 78mm stroke. 650 has a 100mm bore x 83 mm stroke. Cam chain is possibly a different length. Choose an on-line parts retailer and compare to your hearts content.

The cylinder studs may have had to be separated farther and the crankcase spigot hole probably had to be enlarged.

I do know/remember that the valve covers are different. The 600 has 2 alignment dowels, middle front and middle aft. The 650 does not use them.

thanks

cheers mate
sounds less possible than id hoped :-)
thanks for the link too
quite liked the idea of a slightly bigger bore without the longer throw crank
my thoughts being it might pick up through the revs a bit quicker :-)
seemed a bit of a no brainer when i can pick barrel and piston for a 650 up for about the same price as a 600 piston :-)
but ill survive :-)

I didn't say it couldn't be done, because I do not know whether it can or can't be.
I was just suggesting some points to investigate or measure.

There is another member on this forum, name of Ian Hopkin out of UK, who may know more.
Go to 'Tools' in the top tool bar and scroll down to 'Members List'.
You might send him a 'private message', inquiry.
