NC KLR rider

I just have one street bike, a 2005 KLR650 I bought new when I was living in Key West. I only ride for fun, do not commute or ride in town. Lately, I have been loading my bike in the back of my truck to get it up into the Blue Ridge Mountains. Those TKC80s donít last long with 9 hours round trip of I40 just to get to where I like to ride. Mostly stay at BRMC, but looking to find other base camps. I have recently been riding more and more off road stuff and am hoping to get some intel on new and cool places to ride. My KLR has a zillion mods (it seems) but I am sure that stuff will come out in time. Any folks who live and or ride around Asheville/Waynesville/Brevard area, please drop me a note.

Welcome to the forum, Axeman. I'm too far away to be of any assistance.

OK you are looking for similar places like Blue Ridge Motorcycle Camp. That place looks great. I personally stay at Iron Horse Motorcycle Resort it's about 10 miles from the dragon. The owner, John, sometimes has Triumph tiger groups do off road riding nearby in the mountains. The Iron Horse has all different sizes of rooms and even a bunkhouse where you just rent a bed. And they have campsites for cheap, or tents you can rent, I don't know of anyone else that does that. The owners do breakfast and dinner and have a large building where you can hang on rainy days, with big tvs and pool table. Or just a sofa to crash on. For off road riding nearby, or anywhere around Asheville and Brevard, go to the ADV forum and find tons of info.

I know the area well. When you say "base camp" are you asking about a tent in the woods, tent in a campground, a fleabag motel or RV spot? "Base camp" can apply to all of those.

We "camp" in our motorhome in Maggie. We're here all month. We mostly ride the parkway from Cherokee over to hwy 276 and that area but we're on road bikes and are known to go a little fast around the corners.

We not running 100 MPH in the straights, we just pretty much run 55 to 60 even in the curves.

The leaf lookers will slow us down soon. The fall colors are starting here now.

Thank you pdwestman, Lake Abilene, and Toney for the replies. I was up there last Friday - Monday and had a great time, even during the storm. I will be back up there 20-22OCT with a buddy from Orlando. He rides a 2010 BMW 1200GS 30th Year Anniversary Special. We will be riding All day Sat, and 1/2 day on Sun.

Looking fwd to riding with some of you folks sometime soon.
