Hi - I'm new here (9 Nov 2017) Getting my first motorcycle at age 52 - getting a Kawasaki KLR 650 - I'm 6'6" so touching the ground won't be a problem for me.

Hi.
I'm 52 (still) and I'm getting my license to ride after going through 3 days of Harley School. I don't want a mid-life-crisis Harley. Thanks. But I did want to get a dual purpose motorcycle - new, if possible - with a warranty! OMG!
So, for my first motorcycle, I chose to get a 2017 Kawasaki KLR650 this coming week and then I'm going to ride it around, get used to the clutch, gear shifting, and the throttle...then I am going to do some stuff. Not sure what exactly, but I plan on getting around - I plan to start doing day trips first and then overnighters.
I am mechanically inclined, so working on a carburetor shouldn't be so much of a problem, seeing that I used to work on 1970s carburetors on vehicles I owned back in the '80s all the way down to a briggs and stratton lawn mower engine LOL
I just need to have the right stuff in the tool bag - not too much, but enough.
I live in Montgomery County Tennessee.

I've met people of your height with less than 34" legs.

Perry,
As a new owner of a KLR650, you need to read this if you haven't already done so.

Welcome aboard Perry.
I'm also 6'6" with a 36" leg. If you have any questions on setting up your bike, i.e. windshield, pegs, risers, etc. feel free to ask me, as I've been there done it.

First Riding Today

I went for the first riding today and put in 47 miles daytime and about 6 or 7 night time miles.
This is the first time operating a motorcycle outside of a 'classroom' environment and out in public.
Stalled a few times.
It was in the 50s during the day and dropped down to the high 30s after dark. I needed the choke to start the motorcycle.
I even took it on a gravel road for a little while.

Tomorrow, the weather looks like rain in the afternoon, and with the leaves being wet, and having the front tire slide out during the motorcycle class last week from wet leaves, I'm not sure I want to take it on the road just yet if there are wet leaves on the road.
I don't mind playing it safe.

Perry,
Too many dealerships neglect to adjust the vertical focus of the KLR's headlight. They are all grossly too high from the factory and rider weight comes into play.
The RH high beam should have a 2 inch drop from level at 25 feet from a wall with rider weight in position. The vertical adjuster (for both lamps) is at the lower LH corner of the windshield (the windshield must be removed).
I'll suggest that you check your headlight focus before doing much night riding. And if necessary, insist that the selling dealership adjust it, if you can't do it yourself.

Cold start enrichment lever (choke) is required at temps under 70-75f almost always. The engine internal temp is considered still cold under about 125f. That is why they need a minute or two of warm-up to properly respond to throttle.
Ride safe.

Cold rides

Having some great rides in this cold weather! As long as pavement is dry I'm game. I have given the KLR and my carburated Honda Shadow 600 a 15 minwark up, when morning schedule allows!
Consider increasing the throttle idle screw if you are stalling when warmed up. It is on the right side of engine, and the idle speed when warmed up shoild be 1300 rpm.
Have fun!
