Dreaming Big

Hey everyone!

I'm Chris and am currently stationed near Dayton, OH. As of a couple days ago, I've been obsessed with KLRs and really hope that one will compliment my current ride which is a 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser. I'm in the process of doing some research so I figured I should join a forum to give me a good place to search around.

Thanks for having me!

Welcome to the forum Chris.

Avoid Used 2008-2009 KLR's unless Completion of recalls and up-grades are well documented.

Super Clean and 40,000 + miles would be documentation enough for me. Not for others that did have problems with those years.

Thanks for the heads up on that. Can you search by VIN to make sure the recalls were completed? Or take it to a dealer to get it checked?

w w w.kawasaki.c o m / owner center on RH drop down menu

But this still won't gaurentee against getting an oil burner. Because there was No Recall on that issue.

Same with engine balancer chain locking levers (aka, doo-hickey & spring) on ALL YEARS, there has never been a Recall. And never will, imho.

When I decided to get off my Goldwing and do some dual-sporting I did quite a bit of research. Every major manufacturer makes a 650 single cylinder dual-sport bike and they are all mostly good bikes. Different ones suit different riders for different reasons. Some cost more or less; some are better in the dirt or on the road; some require more or less maintenance; some are more comfortable than others; ........ .

I decided on the KLR for the following and I am happy I did:
It has is more comfortable for road riding, but still works fine for long distance dirt road routs across the country.
It has a 6.1 gallon fuel tank compared to 4 gallons on others, so I am not always worried about where to find fuel.
It is water cooled compared to air cooled on most others, so it will last longer. I have one with 54,000 and one with 100,000 miles.

Check in with some local Kaw dealers, they may have 2017s that they need to move. Sometimes peace of mind is worth a few extra dollars..
