New in SoCAl

Greetings. My sportster is leaking a bit of oil with 20k, so I'm looking for something else. It has loads of power and still a good bike. I'm looking for a more on/off road capable ride and am leaning towards a klr because of its highway friendly portion of the band. The other is the DR. However, when as I dug into the research what I found was a ton of people going on LONG adventures with these bikes. I don't own one yet. I'm thinking of buying new and building upon it a bit at a time, or I am also of thinking of buying a POS down near san diego for $500 off cl and working it over. It has 28k miles and no key... so I'm leaning towards new. Thanks for having such a great following of people and a dedicated forum.

I really like buying new never riden, knowing I’m the only one ever on it. It’s a personal thing. Same with my cars.
Used has its appeal also. Cheap, and the satisfaction of bringing it back to life and making it your own.

Welcome to the forum, and good luck with either choice. Lots of knowledge and experience here on both old and new, and the members are eager to help.

The one in San Diego on CL for $500 is a "lien sale" bike.

I'd want to be kind of careful and make sure all my i's were dotted and t's were crossed before I traded money for the bike. The following is from the California DMV Web Site. Link also provided.

Definition of a lien sale

If a person has repaired, furnished supplies or materials, towed or stored a vehicle AND has not been paid for the services rendered, that person has a lien against the vehicle. The lien arises at the time the registered owner is presented with a written statement of charges for completed work or services.

If the vehicle is towed by a public agency or private towing company, the lien arises when the vehicle is towed or transported. The lien may be satisfied by selling the vehicle through the lien sale process.

To conduct a lien sale, the person/lienholder must have possession of the vehicle and have lien sale authorization from DMV. Interested parties, including the registered and legal owners of record will be notified before the sale occurs.

If the vehicle's value is $4,000 or less, the registered and legal owners of record will be notified by the party conducting the lien. If the vehicle's value is greater than $4,000, DMV notifies all interested parties. You can call (916)–657–7617 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. if you have questions regarding lien sales.
