New User with Noob Questions

Hey. New user here. Also relatively recent owner of an 06 KLR 650 via Craigslist.
-Just ordered Clymer manual today.
-Have ridden bike for Summer Season.
-Have made minor mandatory maintenance (Oil change, Battery change, chain cleaning)

Some dumb questions I was looking for answers to:
1) How do I get the bike off the ground for maintenance without the threat of it tipping over? I have a wide jack but it just feels too wobbly to reliably wrench without pushing the whole bike over. Is there a stand of sorts I'm missing? I don't have a center stand on the bike, only a leaning kickstand so the bike has to be "held up" to even be properly jacked.

2) Besides Tire tread, Oil, battery acid level, chain clean/lube- What other important maintenance am I not giving attention to that deserves it? I have the impending feeling that something I'm completely unaware of is and will go wrong one day out on the road and I will be totally unprepared.

Any and all information/advice is welcome!

Congratulations on your purchase. Many others will chime in I am sure. To answer your questions: For a Jack I use one similar to the one pictured. One can go seriously overboard on this "tool" but as long as you employ a "safety strap" to keep the bike positioned on the jack, they work just fine IMHO. As for maintenance and necessary service: 1.) I and others will suggest that you determine if the Doohicky (Counter-Rotating Balancer Chain Tensioner) and it's spring have been replaced. 2.) Flush, Drain and refill the Cooling System, 3.) Check and adjust the Steering Head Bearings. 4.) Properly adjust the Chain. More slack than you probably think necessary. 5.) Check the Valve Adjustments. 6.) Replace the Front Fork Oil. . . . . . that's more than enough from me. Others?

"Trail jacks" are employed by leaning the bike over onto the kickstand 'til the wheel-of-interest is elevated; then . . . a STICK (of some sort) is inserted between the bike's axle. frame, whatever, to hold it up for the desired service.

A thread on this website covers this circumstance rather comprehensively; don't have it located right now.

I thing Bluehighways meant to say re-grease and adjust steering head bearings.
