New KLR owner asks self, “Have I made a huge mistake?”

Just invested $3 grand on a 2001 KLR 650 with just 15,00 miles on it. Jeez! It didn’t look so big in the ‘Rumble-on’ website pics! Size isn’t the problem, tho, both feet fit comfortably flat on the ground. Had my new baby thoroughly inspected- mechanic said ‘it’s a great little bike!’ Engine very strong and responsive. Buuuut, I seem to have big transmission problems, namely, I have no 1st gear and neutral disappears when the bike is a bit above- normal running temp. Wondering, mechanical defect or operator (me) error? Anybody have ideas to share? Or have had similar issues with their KLR?

“Have I made a huge mistake?”

I say so even without the trans issue. 3K for a 2001 with 15K on the clock. Yikes.

Before getting into deeper issues; check the shifter as they commonly crack and that can cause problems shifting. Also if you have a skidplate or aftermarket crash bars, ensure the shifter isn't hitting something preventing a proper shift. when I first mounted my skidplate, I inadvertently positioned a mounting bracket right where the shifter came down - I was convinced I had a tranny problem until i realized what I had done.

If that's not it, you probably need to open her up and look at the shifter mechanism; pawl/spring, etc.

cheers and good luck.
