Hello all

Just wanted to say thank you for this forum. I picked up a 2013 around Thanksgiving, and I've done a fair bit of wrenching on it while it was raining. I love spending time in the garage wrenching almost as much as riding. This forum has been a great resource to do a few important things. Doohickey, progressive springs, rear shock spring, and regular maintenance. Very happy with how she rides now. And the Doo / torsion spring really took out a lot of clackyness.

The bike was well outfitted with Tusk panniers, SWM center kickstand (so far so happy), Sargent seat, tank grips, smaller front fender, klr dash, etc. I've added Rigid lights on the Denali mount. It's beefy. Next week I'll rewire in a relay with a high beam signal. It took me one test drive to figure that out! Put in a Garmin Zumo 595lm as well. Some nice features in that.

I own several bikes. Along with the KLR, I have A '98 Honda Blackbird, and a '75 Kawasaki F11 (that's a 250cc 2 stroke). The '75 has my heart, the Blackbird makes my heart beat double time and the KLR...well, she sounds like a lawnmower and rides like a paint shaker...and I LOVE IT.

Like so many, I envision a trip with the bare necessities and getting off the grid. Yet to do that on a bike. Wife rides with me about 40% of the time. Trying to dial in the bike a bit more for her comfort. We'll see where this leads, but I'm having a great time so far!

Thanks again to this forum for being here.

campfire likes this.

Sounds like a lawnmower, Rides like a paint shaker!

I got 99 problems but fuel injection, 6th gear or a 2nd cylinder ain't 1!

Thought I'd add a pic.

The moment I figured out the kickstand was too long... literally blew over in a light breeze.

This was in the first hour after I got it home. Way to start a relationship

Thanks! Apparently...I'm in to metrics. I really didn't realize that until recently. That '89 4Runner is another hobby in itself.

I see you have those spiffy tec-spec gripster tank guards, too. What do you think of those?

They are pretty grippy. Haven't done much off-road yet, but slow riding I feel them for sure. I like 'em!

Yeah me too. But I did notice that they're not really "repositionable." I tried to refine the placement on mine a week or two after putting 'em on, and had some damage occur to the adhesive (but none to my bike). They're in place now, but I'm looking for an adhesive alternative…

I can't believe you got them off! Mine are stuck like Chuck to that tank!

Heat. Those guys tout the repositionability of their adhesive, but it just ain't so…

Anyway, perhaps this would be a good question to ask: Anyone see a problem using rubber cement on the tank (paint etc.)?

I wanted to make sure I came back here and mentioned that I reached out to the guys at TechSpec and asked why the adhesive wasn't repositionable. They told me that they actually put their heavy-dury adhesive on the KLR gripsters (assuming 'cause KLR so raw-dog soft adhesive just won't do so they're not supposed to be repositionable. I said it was cool and I'd figure out a way to put new adhesive on them, but they insisted on sending a new pair, which I thought was pretty raw-dog of them as well.

I think what I'm gonna do is take the old ones off and add rubber cement where the orginal adhesive gave way. Then I'm gonna stick them to some 3M paint protector film, cut the film to exact fit, and press them against the tank. I think the 3M adhesive will hold strongly enough, but still be peelable.
