Ah, The Smells Of Warm Weather Night Riding

One of the great experiences of riding, in my opinion: the smells of unseen things: a freshly-cut alfalfa field or recently- mown lawn, the earthy vegetation/water smell and accompanying chilliness when you pass through a low-lying area where a creek runs....

The smell of dead, rotting animal carcasses in or alongside the road.

Why is it that for every one out of the first category, you smell five out of the latter?

I commute past a large Hutterite (sp?) colony twice a day and the smell I get is definitely not freshly cut hay! Lol!

I have to say though, one of the true joys of motorcycling is the smells that you just don't get when your driving a car, I love the freshly cut hay smell, and the fresh morning smell. It always strikes me funny that when your traveling on the highway at 65 or 70 miles an hour, and someone throws a cig butt out in front of you, you actually get a whiff of the smoke smell...

Aah, enjoyed the heavy scent of pine riding through the Adirondacks- through hog farm country, not so much.... Evening riding used to be my most enjoyable time, but since crunching a deer on the Blue Ridge Parkway I get a little skittish riding roads with trees lining both sides, where we have abundance of both deer and tree lined roads in Ohio.

Yeah, I ride slow on those 55mph tree-lined roads, like around 45mph. This was the second night in a row I missed, by a hair, a big boar coon coming out of nowhere and running across the road right in front of me. Those things can really haul ass when they want to.

Smells like skunk a LOT in San Francisco. I was thinking the other day, if they knew how well you can pick out vehicles on a MC...cops ride those things, you know...

Smelled better than rotting animal carcass at least.

I love riding by fields of flowers. And riding right by the ocean smells pretty nice. Bay? Not nearly as nice. The wetlands out where I live have a smell that takes some getting used to, but I like it.

i was cruising along a gravel road out here last night and out of the side ditch flew an owl with about a 4 ft wingspan. he flew next to me for about 2 wingbeats then flared up and over me. pretty cool.
