An image of an actual torsion spring might enhance your excellent verbal explanation of its function.

Thanks for the clearest and most complete explanation/demonstration of the balancer chain tensioning system ever.

The only torsion spring I have available is about 2" across

Excellent!

Another question I've always had is why there wasn't an automatic tensioner, like there is with the cam chain. Is there a known answer?
