IMS Tank

Does anyone know if the IMS Tanks are DOT approved? I ordered one because they said it was at KLR650.com, but once started to read the directions, I use that term very loosely, they stated: "FOR COMPETITION USE ONLY" "Legal in California ONLY for racing vehicles Which may never be used upon a highway?" I'm sort of curious if anyone can expand on this. Is the tank going to burst into flames on a highway? Could I be ticketed if pulled over on a highway? Thanks for any input.

There have been cracked IMS tanks, but I don't think the one for the KLR has ever had any problems that I know of. Cops have other things to think about when they pull me over with my IMS tank. I don't worry about it.

+1 I've been running my KLR with the IMS tank for 10,000+ miles on and off road. As for off road it has withstood things that a metal tank would be junk from! As for on road I've never had an issue from the po-po about the knoby tires or plastic tank. Officially both are no-no's in OH.

i have had one on my klr for about 6 months, no prob. at all, but the junk they send as bracket are too flimisy. i used corner braces that i found at a hardware store to mount mine and have no complants, i have the big 6.6 gal. tank that takes the place of the rad. guards, just make sure that the tank does not rum on anything and it will work fine.

I thought I remember reading somewhere that plastic tanks weren't "legal" in California on bikes sold through a dealership..

I wouldn't worry about it unless you're out pulling wheelies in traffic.. My guess is that an officer would be more 1000 times more likely to check your VIN than if your tank were made of legal materials..

I used to have a title and plate for my old KDX200 and rode it on the road.. It was as far from legal as a bike could get (including an IMS tank) and I never had an issue, ever..

Don't sweat it..

Had a little spill

I had a little spill on my bike since installing the IMS tank. It was the first ride, day after Thanksgiving, after I installed the tank. Put a decent gash in the portion that takes place of the radiator shrouds. Does anyone know if that portion of the tank is hollow, or if it is solid? It doesn't appear that you would get gas out of those areas if it is hollow.

I am pretty sure it is hollow. I have considered what could be done to fill that area with something that would become solid so that old gas would not settle there. I would only fill the left lobe and leave the right one open so it would act as reserve reserve. If you ran out you could lay the bike on the left side and pour that additional fuel into the left side near the petcock.

Any ideas on what you might put in the tank to fill that lobe anyone?

Any two part epoxy resin should work. A fiberglass resin might be an alternative.

Are you guys racing your KLRers?
I dont understand why you would compromise the length of a trip by exchanging the beautiful 6.6 G to a 3.2 G.... Your gain , less weight granted, nicer for wheelies and offroading hmm, lol, the more I think about it the sexier a 4-stroke offroader is.. lighter with a huge engine. Its like a mexican stray dog, all cock and ribs

Curiosity rests on the seat of a KilLeR.
