Broken sight glass?????

I just went on a two hour off the pavement trip to satisfy my urge to ride, and got back to town at the light, and discovered oil all over my right boot. I put my foot down at the intersection and my sole was slippery as hell. I figured I must have run through a puddle of oil somehow. Anyway, after I parked the bike in the garage, I noticed oil dripping on the floor. Thats when I discovered that the oil level sight glass on the crankcase was shattered!!!!!!! Holy crap! I'm glad there was still a bunch of oil left in the cranck case. Now I gotta figure out how to fix it. I hope I don't have to take off the whole right side case cover, but I'll bet I do. Now just watch, the weather will get real nice now! Good grief. Does anyone have any experience with this issue?

Looks like you need part reference 52005: Gauge, Oil Level; and part reference 11012: Cap (might get by with re-using the old "Cap").

Source: http://www.kawasaki.com : owner info; view parts diagrams.

Wow, I've never heard of that before. Any idea what broke it?

Sarthurk,
I really hope you simply smacked a rock with the sight glass…..?????
I was practicing for a race one day at a place called croom in central FL. I loaded my kx500 in the haler and the mechanic was like “Hey why do you have oil dripping”? It was a broken sight glass window.
I had thrown a crank bearing, and the gearbox had to be rebuilt. Funny thing was the bike still ran perfect. These Kawasaki’s are amazing…. Thank god at the time it was a factory bike and the guys tore the bike apart that night and I was back on it in the AM at the track….
I am in no way saying that your bottom end is on its way out….. Im just telling you, I have seen a broken sight window and the cause was internal…..
Please let me know what you find…. I am curios

Photo in my gallery

I uploaded a photo in my gallery here.

It appears that a very sharp piece of something hit the sight glass near the 9 o clock position on it, so to speak, and I was pushing the wet gravel pretty hard at ~50 at opportune moments. I did hear and feel a few rocks hit the bike and my legs.

Anyway, I'm thinking I might as well do a clutch job while I'm there.

How can one access your gallery, sarthurk?

Clutch job? Is your clutch failing you?

Sound maintenance, perhaps, but--KLR650 clutches seem pretty robust.

I know; I know--"Then why do they sell replacement disks and springs?"

Touche', touche'.

Taking it apart will be easy. You won't have to worry about draining the oil

Do you have a skid plate on?

OOH, I see a new product idea! Sight glass protector made from billet aluminum. You listening Mr. EM?? I want it to match my oil filler cap.

I don't know how to ACCESS THE GALLERY OR TO POST A PIC. I do know how shut off the caps lock.

I've been leery about the clutch since I bought the bike with 12K on it. It doesn't seem that I have much left to adjust.

Anything else on the right side I can mod while I'm there?

I don't even know how the sight glass is attached? The schematics aren't very clear, and I have yet to find installation/replacement instructions, or any reference to it at all.

Leave it to me to break something nobody else can break!

That's something to be kind of proud of if you look at it right.

Silly question, does your bike have the PCV mod? I vaguely (though I'm probably wrong, I have a crap memory) recall reading something on "the other" KLR website about a PCV valve sticking shut and overpressuring the crankcase pushing the sight glass out. Though if yours shows an impact it probably was a rock. Hoping you get it fixed without too much grief.
