Other "KLR" Site?

Ok, I am pretty new and recently got back to KLRs after a 10 year hiatus. Like all new owners, I have researched the KLR and known issues and popular mods. Like many, I found a few dedicated websites with useful information. I am quite often not allowed on the other site because I have not signed up as a "Premium" member. It is frustrating enough to make me think, "Why do I need this site?" Are they really that busy or is it just a ploy? I don't really care one way or another and this site has all that I need and very informed, polite and friendly posters.

I know what you mean about the other sites "busy if not a premium member" pop up, I get it almost every time I go there, and it doesn't matter what time of day I go. Lol, they even have an area "exclusively for premium members". That's not segregation is it? Much nicer here with lots of friendly helpful folks.

we share a similar experience. Last year I re-entered the KLR world after many years of hiatus.
I was so desperate for all the info I could get that I did pay on the other site just so I could glean information at will.

These days I pretty much never go to that other site except to check the classifieds occasionally.

I haven't even picked up my 03 KLR yet. But in anticipation and excitement, I naturally gravitate toward researching what I need to do when I get it. As a "newbie" or returning to KLR ownership I try and use the web as a knowledge/experience tool and I feel slighted by never being allowed on at just about any time of day. Since this forum offers more w/o resorting to extortion and aloofness, I guess this is where I want to play and contribute as I grow.

The objective of this forum is to provide an open and friendly community for the exchange of KLR and motorcycle information, lore, and humor. It is a 'for profit' site, for sure, but the revenue comes from our supporting vendors (bless 'em and support 'em!) and advertising, not from the wallets of the participants. You may notice that some members are premium members, but that's an entirely voluntary thing; they get nothing special for it other than the satisfaction of having provided a bit of support to a great forum.

The best analogy I can make is that we all just finished a really cool ride and we're sittin' around the campfire, relaxed with an adult beverage, and enjoying one another's company. The conversation naturally gravitates towards the objects of our affection, which may be KLRs, motorcycles, fishing, knives, bacon recipes and so on.

We pretty much let the conversation run; a lot of good dialog ensues. Like any campfire group we have our wizened old hands, jokers, philosophers, new comers, bacon eaters, extroverts, introverts, exhibitionists, and thread jackers. Most of our members fit into more than one of those categories, and a few are in a category of their own. Come to know them and enjoy them. We're really an eclectic bunch.

Just as anyone would around a campfire, if someone shows up and acts rudely we will ask them to step off a bit. There are honky-tonks where that's the norm and they can go there.

So welcome to the forum and pull up a chair and join us. Throw your log on the fire and kick back. Take yer shoes off and set a spell.

You did good, Cabrito!

"Looks like we got another player on the team" Tom said gamely.

Tom, that was a great summation. I had the same experience. I pay to be a member here because I have gotten SO much from this site and the people here. And because I wasn't harassed about it.

I was a non-paying member for a while and then I realized that I WANTED to help out with the bills. But there is no 'sell' here. Part of the reason I love it. And part of the reason I chose to shell out some money even though I didn't have to.

I truly hope that everyone who stops by and decides to become a part of this KLR network finds things here they don't find elsewhere. And not necessarily technical orientated "things". Respectful regard for opinions, methods and choices are the foundation everything else is built upon here. If that has no value to you, I can suggest a few places that operate sans these luxuries.

Other sites, at this time, have more in depth technical topics. More "How to's". We have the opportunity to build our own library from our own experiences and submissions. And we are. The difference? The way we do it makes the site "ours". Not "their's". When we come here, we aren't in someone else's house, playing by their rules. We are in our house. Each and every one of us can make this everything it can be. And it becomes a part of you. We. You. I. Not them. I value that.

And I'm going to expose an ongoing disappointment I experience from time to time. More often than I care to see, we are referring members to other sites for technical help. I think that if we lack a "how to" for a certain procedure, it could be viewed as an opportunity to create and have on hand a "how to" that requests could be directed to. Tom has put some great effort into building a tech library for us. It could quadruple in volume if each of us contributed one modification, one upgrade, one procedure. This is really our site. Like a garden, it will produce based on how it is tended to. Give, and you own a piece of this place. Forever. Or, I guess we could just send a newcomer from "our" site, over to the "premium channel".

100 percent agree. I found this site after my bad experience on the other site. Glad I did as this is more like my Bronco and Explorer Forums I belong to.
