I don't think I can do this

Gas prices what they are I filled up yesterday and decided I would ride as frugally as possible to maximize MPG to and from work......Air up tires to max. No warm up, just start and go. Ease away from stops. Keep RPM's below 4K. No wheelies, repeat, NO WHEELIES. I managed today for a total of 32 miles. Barely.

This isn't any fun.

Gray-haired riders don’t get that way from pure luck.

We're both singin' from the same hymnal. This mornin', I took on the 42 mile commute astride a fiery steed of 249 CC badness. Conservative riding that my insurance lady and the local Gestapo would admire, I squeezed out a miserly 64 MPG. One may not use the terms aerodynamic and KLR 250 in the same paragraph, unless one has replaced the stock front fender. If I used a small picnic table for a fender, it may be an improvement as far as wind affect on the bike. Its kind of like riding a Shetland Pony. That Mike Tyson is using as a speed bag.

And, a new awareness. Even the Chinese scooter brigade won't wave to a KLR 250.

I try not to look at the pump or track my gas mileage. It's only gonna get worse.

I don't worry about getting on the gas on the KLR. It still gets 25mpg's better than the Saab, and about 40mpg's better than the Land Cruiser so I'm coming out ahead any way I look at it.
I almost apologized to the Saab yesterday when I only put half a tank in and used regular... (usually I use Premium and always fill it up)
Actually my neighbor thought I'd sold the Saab because I hardly ever drive it anymore.

First off you have a klr that you can wheelie...I saw on another site where some people are using a 17 tooth front sprocket...I have the 16 T that improved my mpg 50-54.... With 42 Lt. hard bags that sticking out like a fat girls hips I guess that's not to bad ... Anyone have a 17 T if so how is your mpg and is it a wheelie killer, not that I can do a wheelie even when I switch to a 14 T ??

My KLR will not loft the front wheel just by twisting the throttle unless crossing a high crowned road. Learned that quite by accident and now I look for those opportunities :-0 Otherwise it takes a bit of throttle / clutch manipulation. First gear easy, second gear takes that and a tug on the bars.

I've been getting around 48 MPG but want to see what it will get if ridden carefully. Carrying a gallon of gas I once ran the reserve to empty at 265 miles just to see the range a full tank would give. Usually tap the reserve at the 220 - 230 mark.

Gray-haired riders don’t get that way from pure luck.
