Tubes or Patches

Ok do U carry both tubes or do U just patches and small inflater pump.On my other KLR I carried Both tubes & a electric inflater,but they took up alot of space.I had a 3 1/2 ABS tool tube with tools & stuff in it across the back support on the HT frame.

I had carried tubes that had been given to me by the previous owner, but believe it or not, they rusted out. I'm now using patches and a pump instead (well, i had the pump already anyway).

I'm no great adventure rider who's done dozens of repairs along the road, but I carry tubes, a patch kit and a pump. I carry tubes because I don't know if the patch kit could handle something like a long seam/splice split. It's a great feeling knowing I can jack up the bike, fix a flat and be on my way again in short order if I need to.

I made sure my tubes were dry and put them (individually so they wouldn't rub together) in a gallon ziploc with a little talcum powder, then inside another ziploc hoping that would take care of any chafing issues. I'm going to pull them out at the end of the season and see how they stood up to this storage method. I also carry a small container of talc to use on them and to assist in getting tires on and off. I keep all this stuff in those little pannier bag things that attach to my HT nerf bars.

I carry irons, valve stem tool, patch kit, trail jack, 12v compressor stripped of housing and fan, and one 21" tube. The tube will work front and back if it comes to it. A rear 17" tube will only work on the rear. Ideal? Maybe not. It's got me home. And a few other riders.

I change my tires with the tools on the bike, on the floor. And I have two floor mounted tire changers. It ain't rocket science, nor is it a feat of strength. All in the way you hold your tongue.

That sounds like a great low-tech way to keep the tubes in good condition. Thanks for sharing.

Mainly because . . . please don't let it get around, but . . . I've been know to nick, to pinch, to puncture BRAND NEW VIRGIN INNER TUBES UPON INSTALLATION!!!!!!!!!

So, should this unlikely event re-occur, I have patches to compensate for my incompetence . . .

Yet, my negligence caught up with me just recently; left home WITHOUT an air source (e.g., electric compressor); had a flat, and . . . shortening my story, the time-to-repair robbed me of a planned Ride-To-Eat meeting in the upper Shenandoah Valley of West Virginia . . . yes, I knew better; don't YOU repeat my mistake!
