How anal am I?

Before the trip to Etna (1200ish miles total I believe) I cleaned and lubed my chain, cleaned the air filter, and changed oil and filter. Standard practice before a long trip.

I'm going to do it all over again. Standard practice upon returning home.

Would you? The only thing I think is overly anal is the air filter since we didn't do any serious dust, just some gravel. I imagine it's still pretty clean...I may skip that if it looks OK. (I've been super busy and so far have just washed the bike and cleaned the chain). I haven't even really ridden it's been so freakin' hot.

Anyway, I was just curious what y'all would do...

(P.S. - Yes, I know some consider washing the bike overly anal)

Come to think of it, I added enough GD fresh oil, it might not need an oil change.

Hey…. When you finally decide to sell that old PIG, you let me know….

You may want to rotate the AIR in your tires also… front to back & back to front. I would really recommend you do this every fill up.

The next time you set aside 2 hours to do all that…. GO FISHING

You are definitely Thorough that is for sure.

I clocked 1272 miles so you had to be over that..

While in Etna I noticed that my filter needs to be cleaned. I should also change my oil because I need to see if my broken spring part is on the magnetic drain plug. (even though I also changed the oil right before the trip)

I'd like to see how you clean the filter because I've never done it. If you do decide to clean your air filter let's get together if we can make the time.

You really want to remember to “Blow your exhaust out with air”, before and after a long ride.

re: How Anal Am I?

Do you weigh yourself before, and then after, taking a poop?

If the answer is no, then you have a way yet to go....

But washing a KLR has you headed down that path, I'm afraid.

Washing KLRs is why God makes it rain.

You guys are cracking me up. Yeah, I should probably go fishing. I think I will change the oil though. Soon. Ish. After I go fishing.

Cabrito, mine won't be too dirty again for a while, but we can sure do it together...yours was, well, not clean. I got the cleaner and the oil. Don't use Kerosene anymore. This weekend is pretty jammed, but maybe next weekend I can roll up? PM me.

Hey Jake, funny you should mention that. I was just saying to my wife yesterday that one of the interesting things about the forums is that if someone decides to sell their bike you kind of know what you're getting...know what they've done. And, well, how anal they are. But I'm not selling. Still got lots of oil to burn.

Let me approach it this way. Isn't it filtering as good or BETTER than when it was cleaned, as things fill the filter element? And if so, then if your MPG is not down due to restriction, wouldn't that mean it's not too dirty?

I know that's a little out there in the wording to make that question short, but I'll usually go between 6,000 and 15,000 miles per air filter cleaning, and my mileage never takes a jump after the clean (I keep good records)... thus it must not have been too dirty / restrictive?

Food for thought. My vote - go ride with that new found hour.

Wattman, I agree with you 100% (and dig my Thermal Robert (props to Cheap) BTW). Oil and general maintenance I'm pretty anal about. I think the air filter would be overkill. When I cleaned it before the trip it was barely dirty...the PJ1 cleaner just smells so nice...

Jake, I hear you brother. You should see how much she likes talking about pocket knives.
