Not much to be had in the way of power with the klr. Biggest gains would be to go with a big bore kit. Exhaust gains would be in a better sound and weight reduction. I'm very happy with my fmf pipe. No real noticeable power gain from it though.

My .02...totally agree. Your money would be better spent on a 685 kit.

So there is really no gain with power over the stock exhaust. What about a jet kit? I know it is not a power house from the start, but are there any mods that will add power, other than a big bore kit. That might come later, but not with 1300 miles.

With an exhaust and proper jetting you can get about 10% power gain.

+1 on the last post. An aftermarket exhaust with a stage 1 jet kit will do wonders. I did it on my 05 KLR, as well as on my 09 KLR. Each time, I had 1 done before the other, and I think the exhaust gave just as much of a noticeable increase in power as the jet kit, and vice versa. Combined, you get a noticeable gain in HP's. Also, yank out the snorkel at the top left side of the airbox and throw it away. Go with the 142 jet. It will really give you more juice.

Oh....I went with the FMF Q4 on both bikes...wouldn't have it any other way.

Hey rickyp, how much louder did yur bike get with the FMF? I dont want to rattle my neigbors windows like i do with my two stroke, but would not mind more noise. Just wondering.

For dirt cheap you can do the .22 carb mod, open the air/fuel screw, remove the airbox snorkle, and remove the baffle from the exhaust. All these little mods add up to quite abit of SOP (seat of the pants) feel for very little dough. I recently added the "frugal exhaust mod" and it made a nice difference. Then added a polished top to finish it off and point the "thump" away from my ears.

may I query as to why you went with a 142 jet? My 08 stock was 145. Bumping it up 1 size put me at a 148. Did some years come with a leaner jet?
