So there I was at around 4:45 p.m. west coast time going up Mount Rose Hi-way enjoying my KLR and thinking every thing is fine because the temp gauge isn't showing signs that the motor is on fire. I'm thinking I'd like to just go up there (to Tahoe) and buy some lottery tickets and have a cup of coffee and then go back home.
So I'm riding and riding and finally make it to South Lake Tahoe (where the casinos are) and I keep riding until I see a sign that welcomes me to California (where lottery tickets are sold). So I stop at some gas station that has a little convenience store with it and I ask these East Indian folks running the place if they sell lottery tickets. They said no but pointed me to go further down the road.
So I'm traveling down this road and pretty soon I'm not seeing too much of anything except some tent camping places and things are getting more wildernessy as I go along and then I soon realize that I'm on the road that if I stay on it it will take me all the way around the lake. So, I think, why not?
I'm only wearing a t-shirt and it's a little cold but not too bad. So I ride and here and there run into some kinda cool places that have little shops and cabins and eventually I get to a place called Tahoe City, California and that area is nice and clean. I wanted to stop somewhere to get a coffee but the restaurants I saw had lots of cars parked around 'em so I didn't want to mess with anything too busy and so I kept riding.
One person flicked his lights signaling that maybe mine weren't on. This was around 7 and the sun was well past the zenith so it was getting a little dark. I kept riding until I got to where I was close to taking Mount Rose back to Reno though at this time I was still in California. So there I was putting through this little village on the lake and I see a simple place where I can get some coffee and sit at a little table in front so as to watch the traffic and see the lake. I give the girl $4 for a cup that cost $3.19 for medium and tell her to keep the change. Feeling like a big man for being so generous, I walked over to the coffee cylinder container and find that there's only like three swallows of coffee. She offers to return some of my dough as I didn't want to wait around for her to make more but I tell her to keep it anyway.
I step outside take two swallows and throw it away. It tasted awful with the two ounces of suger-free vanilla she put in it. I go to a 7-Eleven down the road and buy some lottery tickets. I come out and start my bike up and put my hand in front of the head lamp. NO LIGHT!
I start riding like a banshee and eventually see a sign with an arrow that says 35 miles to Reno! I ride up the hill and then down the long, winding other side like a mad man because I just want to get to my cozy apartment and have a cup of coffee while there's still a hint of sunlight. People are honking and I just keep gasing it hoping a cop doesn't happen along. I don't at all like riding in an unsafe manner but I at least hit the turn signals when I got into areas where there was some traffic so that they'd at least know I was there. (Neither high beam or low bean or the instrument lights worked.)
It's a pretty crappy thing to be a good ways from home and have to go crazy speeds in order to race the waning sun rays. And what is it about my bike that it seems like nearly every time I get on it something goes wrong? Grrrrr.
Thanks for reading about my little adventure.
