Bike Shopping / VStrom v KLR

Ok guys. I posted this same thread on the VStrom forum and now I want to hear from you KLR guys. I'm looking to get back into biking after being out for a few years. A few of us are planning a trip to Alaska/Deadhorse and I've got my bike choice narrowed down to the KLR 650 or Vstrom 650. Suggestions, thoughts, recommendations. Would love to hear from those of you with actual experience on a trip like this one. Suggestions and/or advice on accessories and prep would be great. Thanks much.

I actually own a 2006 KLR 650 & a 2007 DL650 Vstom. Both are good bikes and I think you could make the trip on either bike, just take time to choose your gear. I will say that for a lot of road riding to get there, I would probably go w/ the Vstrom. The Vstrom has a little more power and still gets very good mileage. I figure you could load both bikes down but I think the extra power of the Vstrom would be nice when considering the length of the trip.

I made the trip. Did it on my dl1000. My riding buddy was on his dl650. Having owned a KLR '09 for a brief time(shopping again), I would absolutely say the v-Strom is the way to go for that trip. The trip I am now interested in:the Trans-American-Trail will best be traversed with the KLR. Want any add. Info. Let me know .

depends on the amount of dirt vs the amound of pavement. Mostly pavement with some dirt roads? Vstrom. Lots of dirt roads and gravel? KLR.
Put some agressive tires on the Vstrom and it will handle better off road.

I have a 2009 klr and a 2008 wee. love them both.
For the cost dif. you can a lot of goodies to the klr.
I like the fact that I can fix almost everything on the klr.
Last year on the great divide trail two bikes with fuel injection had problems----tow time.
