Cool The easy question!

I have been on te forum for a few months now and still have one question left unanswered, well maybe 2 or 3.
What does KLR stand for? If I can get this answer, then complete the Doohickey replacement I think I will feel accepted!

Why do all the "Big 3" common dual-sport bikes have an "R" in them?

KLR650
DR650
XR650

I have no idea what any of these letters from any manufacturer stand for, but find it interesting they all contain an "R."

K = Kawasaki

L = 4-stroke Engine

R = "Dual-purpose" Service

No doohickey failures since '08 models released. If you ride a late-model bike, you may still need to replace your doohickey to be "accepted," by some.

So what's the deal with the R?

Seems strange 3 different manufacturers would use the same letter. Is this an "industry standard"/marketing thing or just coincidence?

I cannot speak for other manufacturers, but with Kawasaki,
Quote:
R = "Dual-purpose" Service
Otherwise, in Kawasaki's code (or, "kode"), an "X" would indicate a more competitive service application, as in moto-cross or enduro.

Example: KLX650.

Some of these are pretty funny.
