California and South West tour..1st weeks of April!

Hey Guys

So my buddy will be returning from an Army tour of Afghanistan and buying
his first KLR.

We intend to launch out of the Bay Area the 1st week of April and cross the South West to Texas.

He is going there one way and I will probably make half of the trip and then head back to California, due to work/funds/wife...you know how it is.

It will be a nice coming home trip for him, he doesnt have much riding experience and this will definatly be his first long tour.

If anybody want to join for any portion or pick up the relay and help him on his way your more than welcome to come.. For my Bay Area homies, a circle route south along the coast and then east and maybe back through Bishop/Sonora pass would be fun.. No plan is set in stone.

As for other things, my old lady is out of town from the 29th of March through the 2nd of April, that's when my buddy is coming out and a mini tech day may be in order to prep bikes for the trip and pass on any KLR knowledge we have.

Post up if your down for any or all of this adventure!!

Thank your buddy when he gets back. Our men and women in the service rarely get the thanks they are truly due.
I'm a new member to the forum, if welcome, I would be very interested in a tech day, I'm in the east bay. Depending on the circuit and my fam's schedule also possibly accompying for a porton of the ride. I'll be keeping an eye out. Thanks.

Will he be active duty still? Does he have a MSF cert? I think that current enlisted need the class before they can ride.

Kind of a weird snow year here in California but don't count on any of the passes being opened that early. Normally they don't clear until late May/early June.

Spring is the best time to ride through Death Valley. I would head from the coast over 58 to Bakersfield and than 178 to 395. Here's a Google map. Should be green and nice weather (maybe!).

I live in Ridgecrest. Let me know if you're coming this way!

Yeah I was thinking the same thing about snow/passes..wishful thinking though..

I have to make a correction: He will end his ride in Colorado to pick up his truck and drive it to Texas.

He is taking the Military riding class on the 20th of March. All Military need to take the class before riding these days I believe. Damn Top Gun, too many kids watching Tom Cruise pop wheelies next to F14's and all..

If we do a Tech Day it would be on Saturday the 31st, If I am positive my old lady is not coming back till Monday the 2nd people will be welcome to camp or sleep on the couch.

Either way might be a good chance to BBQ, Ride a bit up Mt Hamilton or venture over to Metcalf OHV, and drink some beers!

As for the ride...Hwy 1 south, I know a good spot near Solvang to camp at the first night...then East.

Ill keep you all posted and confirm as the dates draw closer.....

BTW: He tried to join the forums but it said he was a spammer...might be the Afghani IP address......
