Newby Help! 2011 or 2012?

Hello, this is my first post in this forum. I'm looking at a 2011 or 2012 KLR, both new from my local dealership. My question is, is there much ,or anything different from these two years that is relevant? The 2011 has a $600 cash back deal. Currently the dealership is quoting MSRP, but they say they can get a 2011 in black (sorry I can't recall the kawasaki color). I'm going to test drive the 2012 tomorrow. Also, I was told that I can install a lowering kit. Can anyone shine light on this kit, how much it helps, cost etc. Also, any "Dealing with the dealership" advice would be appreciated.

On a side note, Honda has nothing on the KLR in comparison, and I couldn't find an equivalent Suzuki to sit my ars on.

I currently own a 1981 KZ550, that's in almost pristine condition, but want something new and different.

Again, I'm about to pull the trigger on this. Any words of wisdom on my issue, purchasing, etc. would be greatly appreciated. I'm sure that I'll have many more questions! Thanks.

The difference is nothing other than color and resale value.. The 2011 will be a year old when you ride away from the dealership. If that doesn't bother you, go with the 11.. If it does, go with the 12..

I wish we could pass on some great information that would make your mind up, but that's all we have..

There are a couple different ways to get your ride height shorter. The seat and links. With the links you lose suspension travel but the dogbones are relatively cheap. The stock seat of a KLR sucks at best, so if you ride much you need one anyway. Corbin, Sargeant, and Seat Concepts all have dished seats to help get your feet on the ground.

Go for the 2011 in black, I hear there the fastest... but my blue one would beg to differ... Only difference i have seen is the price. Had the choice myself and went with the 2011 because i could get the 600 cash back as well as negotiate the price a little more since it was a year old brand new. go figure.

Thanks for the replies. I pulled the trigger on a 2012. They were unable to get a 2011 in black. The closest one was in North Dakota, two states away. It would have wiped out the $600 cash back deal. I'll look into the seats. I was told that with installing the dog bone I would have to shorten the kick stand, is that true?

Another question; where do you all keep your registration and proof of insurance on this bike?

I keep my reg and insurance papers in a ziplock bag in one of the side pockets of my luggage. I am using the Kawasaki soft luggage on my 06. They are not water proof. Just looked at them the other day and they were damp. So I let them dry out and got new ziplock.

I have all kinds of places I can put it now, but when the bike was stock, I just folded them up in a Ziploc and put them under the stock tool kit in the little holder on the luggage rack.

Actually, my insurance card was just always in my wallet so I guess it's just the registration that was in there. Come to think of it, it still is, but I've got an Action Packer bolted to my luggage rack covering that little tool kit holder along with the tool kit and the registration. I couldn't even get to it without unbolting the Packer.

For what it's worth, I work with a cop and he said in this day and age of mobile computers, it's no big deal if somebody doesn't have their paper registration and he never even asks them for it. It's something they just automatically check on the computer when they pull somebody over.

I suppose it's probably still a "requirement" for you to have your own, though. Seems like the easiest thing to do would be to scan it and shrink it to a point where it's still readable then just fold it up and put it in your wallet.
My wife always makes sure there's room in my wallet for stuff like that by keeping me from taking up room in it with stuff like cash.

I keep my reg and insurance in a zip loc in my riding jacket as well. I only have one riding jacket so I never forget them... Lol!

As far as bike choice, I personally would have went for the 2012 as well, love the blacked out look!
