Buying New KLR

OK, I want a new one. I have plans for it I can get into later.
The local dealer, Del Amo Motor Sports, seems friendly enough, but the bike seems about 1,500 overpriced out the door.
I have limited vehicle buying experience and really want to get one of these out thru California, Nevada anbd Utah, maybe more, this summer, so I need to watch my pennies so I can set the bike up so I can tour it. I've read a bunch of threads already, but my main concern is getting as much as I can out of the dealer out the door. Though I have been looking at these bikes for a couple years, I'm not sure what I might want from Kawi, center stand, taller windshield, crash gaurds etc, or just get a good price on the basic bike and do the rest myself, which is part of the fun, but also can get over budget really quick as I learned two years ago with my cruiser.
They have a used one I can test ride, an '11, which is cool.
Also, I'm a little hesitant going down from a 700 lb V-Star 1300 cruiser fully set up for camp touring, which is a bull on the open road down to a 650. Wind bothers me a bit. So the KLR is a bit of a question mark regarding the freeway, the long pulls between funner backroads and dirt where I can't take my big bike.
All feedback much appreciated, and thanks to the moderator for the welcome.

I just bought a new 2012 KLR in March. I'll be happy to share my experience, what are your questions specifically? Happy to share my experience.

I have an 09 that I bought new and it's still evolving into what I want. I would concentrate on getting the best deal out the door and farkle it yourself. Deciding what suits your style is the fun part, as far as worrying about highway the KLR does just fine, I've done multiple 600 mile days with no complaints.

Hi Little steve, welcome to the fourms.

I have an 06 which is a generation 1 bike. I've never driven a generation 2 bike (2008 and newer). The aerodynamics are significantly changed on the newer one, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

You can improve the KLR with aftermarket parts. Namely a front fender and brush (hand) guards. I found that a full face helmet (Fly Trekker compared with a three quarters helmet) helped stabilize my head and consequently the bike (perhaps I'm imagining things, I donno).

I've only ever taken the bike to ~65, and for me it was okay, I just wasn't comfortable with the speeds. I've never traveled far, so this was all on back roads where a deer or something could pop out at any time. Really 65 is probably too fast for those roads. Regardless, I find the bike pretty stable with stock fenders on it.

Others may disagree (rightly so, they undoubtedly have way more highway speed miles than me) but that is just my opinion - take it for what it is worth.
