Cheap Luggage????

While I love my well farkled 07 KLR, I just can't bring myself to spend $700 for a good set of panniers which might get used once a year. I've seen the Ammo Box idea but you still need an expensive rack and the boxes weigh a bunch. The Giant Loop Great Basin bag is interesting but still $400. Has anyone got a good solutions that doesn't cost a bunch? I've thought about taking some canoe type dry bags and trying to make saddle bags but I'd like to hear some good ideas from the group. As always, thanks for the expert advise.

I bought my KLR used and it came with the racks already on it. They are Wolfman racks and bags. You might take a look at the website. It looks like they have some bags that look like canoe bags. You might get some ideas from them. Also I've seen pics around of people that made their own racks.

I own a pretty nice set of hard boxes for my 03, I actually prefer using the Ortlieb soft bags that I used on my bicycle trips for many years. I made a couple of quick brackets that snaps them onto the original hardcase mounts.

One of these days I intend to redo it using light 1" metal strap and lose the weight of the existing frame, these bags hold plenty. As pictured I'm loaded to go for a day or a month.

I have put over 10K on this setup this year and had a couple of slow speed drops with no damage beyond scrapes and scratches.

Nice bags as well as a picture to envy. I think the hard bags are great and I could probably fab a good enough set of racks but the boxes are just too expensive for something that I wouldn't use often. I think the canoe dry bag idea has merit. Hopefully someone will send in a really good solutions. I bought the fandago bag because I liked it better than all of the other tank bags and I'll use it a lot.

I'm working on making a set of racks out of elect. conduit for my KLR. I want to use my same bags that I put on my NX250. Just swap them at will.
Here's how they look on the NX.... http://www.powers31.info/nx250_saddlebags.htm

They cost about $80 - $90 ?? at LeatherUp.com.

They hold their shape good and hold quite a bit.
Just put this tail bag on and it also holds a lot....

I just strap a duffle bag across the back. Bought it at Walmart for about $20. It's not waterproof but I live in the desert. Walmart also has waterproof duffles for about $50.

Use good straps not bungies to attach it!
