You know I have a bunch of extras on my bike and the one I needed most I did not have. You mentioned bottomed out...I did that a while back on a big rock and cracked my engine case at the drain plug even with a rock guard. Some smart guy on this form pointed out you can get a low profile drain plug that would have saved me from dealing with that problem. So you I would say low profile drian plug. A Google search for "klr 650 low profile drain plug" will get you on track.
Considering your travails and also those of others I've heard about, very good advice, moriver. You weren't the first one it happened to and you definitely won't be the last. Why Kawasaki put the oil drain plug on the bottom of the engine and not on the side I'll never understand; definitely an Achilles' heel that should be considered. An aftermarket metal guard and a low-profile drain plug are worthwhile investments in my book.
