New member, looking at KLR this weekend

I'm new here but not entirely new to bikes or even the KLR. I rode my friend's '08 KLR for about a month and in that period decided I needed one

I'm going to look at (and buy) a 2008 with 2,400 miles on it. It was purchased for an intended trip that never happened. It's got some nice farkles, so I won't have to do much to make it 'mine' at first. It sat for a short time, but the owner took it to the Kaw shop and they cleaned the carburetor and did an all-around tune-up. I have no reason to believe that anything is wrong with it and I'm not too worried because the bike is in such great shape and the owner seems like a good guy.

My question to you: Is there anything specific I should be wary of/look for? I do know that this year (maybe not in particular) is prone to oil consumption so I'll be conscious of that and the doohickey was replaced as a preventative measure, so that's set.

I have checked out the 'Known Issues page' here and so this is a start: bigcee.com/klr650faq.html#knownissues

I think I'm just really trying to be safe with this purchase and ultimately I'm just going to be really happy with it.

Thanks for any help and I hope to be a member of the KLR community very soon.

Good to have you. I have an 08. The only issue that I thought much about was oil burning in the 08 model year. I dont burn hardly any oil so I am happy

If the price is right, it sounds like a slam dunk. If he was planning a trip he probably did too much KLR reading and everything and then some is taken care of. It will be obvious if the miles aren't right or if he trail rode it for 2400 (which I doubt either one).

WELCOME!

I'm discovering miles are not a huge indicator of overall wear. I bought my 01 a month ago with just under 13k, which I felt was low miles. I've needed to replace the front tire, spark plug, air filter, thermostat, chain, and will be replacing the front brakes and the rear hub damper (cush drive). I also at some point will need to change out the kickstand as this one has a do it yourself kickstand that leans the bike over way to far, and have some other minor wear issues.

I'm still very happy I bought the bike, and I got it at a low price, but by the time I have everything fixed I need fixed I could have spent the same money and bought one with probably a few more miles, but in better overall condition and saved myself some time and effort.

Thanks guys. Seems like this should be a good deal. I'll post photos once it's mine. I have photos now, but since he might be a poster on the forum I'd rather not be posting his bike as mine, since it isn't yet.
