Stock Hand Guards

Forgot my waterproof gloves today. Came out of work to find it raining. That sucked, because I hate wet gloves. Rode 35 miles in a steady rain and my regular gloves were dry as a bone when I got home. So, IMHO, the stock guards may be big, ugly and offer little protection for handlebar components, but they sure do a great job keeping your hands dry when it's raining.

Helps in a cold wind, too.

And they can be used as shovels to dig your bike out of the sand

You know, I think they would actually work fairly well for that.

I rode my KLR home from dealer, in a light rain, when I first picked it up. (about 30 miles.)All I had on is my mesh jacket, with it's thin liner, and summer leather gloves.

Gloves were slightly damp on knuckles and no wet at all on my regular shirt.

Ageed...they look like hell, wouldn't do much in a run-in with a tree, but they are great weather protection.

Unfortunately they don't often survive tip-overs. A slow leak in my rear tire caused my bike to slowly tip over-center while parked. Came back to a laying bike and a shattered hand guard.

Yeah, I've already replaced one for the same reason.
