Turn Signals

OK. Maybe 1 out of 25 people use their turn signals. On a bike, that can mean instant death since they also don't check their blind spots. If people used their turn signals, it would save lives. No doubt. And it would prevent accidents. So cops write tickets all the time for speeding and not stopping fully at a stop sign and other stupid shit that probably won't hurt anyone. Why don't they ticket all the ****ers who are too stupid to realize that their cars came with turn signals. Seriously? Make the fine a thousand bucks. Revenue and safety! ????

It's a regional thing..

I remember a comedian saying that if you see a turn signal on in the South, it's been on since the car was new..

Here in the Midwest signal use is pretty good.. We seem to self police it..
If someone doesn't use their signal, we'll ask them if they're broken?? When they reply "no", we inform them to use them.. After a while it turns into "it's hard to use the stalk when it's up your ass!"..

I'll occasionally turn my signals on and point at them and shrug!! They get the hint..

I've talked to people and gestured...some understand. You're right, it is regional. But it's terrible where my folks are in PA. CA is ridiculous. The whole west coast except for Seattle. I just don't get it. Cops need to ticket people, why not ticket something that could actually save a life?

I followed my buddy the other night when he was returning a rental car and he didn't use it once (15 miles). I talked to him about it. It's just surreal.

On the back bumper of my car in big decal letters I had made it says, "Please, See Bikers". I put it on there after Darin. Bikers and drivers seem to get it.

Cars are just so scary. Going through intersections texting is big here. Hitting a car sucks, killing a MClist would change your life...what about running over a kid.

The turn signal thing got me the other day because my buddy knows I ride and his cousin rides and he has three kids. He didn't seem to "get" it. I guess the 'Use your Blinkers' decal will have to go on the trunk. If people would just consider the worst case scenario...

At stop lights next to fancy cars with the windows down I usually say, "You paid all that money for a nice car and it didn't come with turn signals?"

I figure you'll see police start ticketing for that the same time as they start ticketing HD and HD wannabees for loud exhaust.

Good point. A harley went by the other morning that woke up both my girls, Karen and me (I can barely hear). He sure sounded safe. Until I find him and happen to be carrying a bat.

Around here, the saying is "Nobody bothers using turn signals because everybody already knows where you're going."

Use is actually pretty decent in the immediate area here, but out on the Interstate people change lanes all the time without signalling. I always figure if they didn't bother signalling, they probably didn't bother looking all that hard to see if it was clear. They might have glanced for something as large as a car, but not twice for a motorcycle before they switched lanes.

My wife usually blurts out the stereotypical "WTF? Were turn signals optional on that model year?" She doesn't even ride a motorcycle and it bothers her more than it does me.

I have to lane share for most of my commute due to the snarl of traffic on my routes. I always make sure to give a person with their signal on ample room and time to get over, and then make sure to wave to them after I pass because most will just zip right over no signal or anything, not only without looking but also in spots not quite big enough, causing the car they just cut off to brake and evade. It can get a little hairy sometimes so I always want people who do signal to know its appreciated by us motorcyclists. Who knows, maybe people behind those that signal and get thanked may start signaling... One could hope at least, but I won't hold my breath, I do live in California.

You're right on the money, Lockjaw. Seems failure to use turn signals results in more accidents than the "distracted driving" everybody seems to be cracking down on. Perhaps "those people" should change their focus a little....
