An Interesting Look at Motorcycle Oil Vs. Automobile Oil

I found this online. I've been using Castrol GTX in my vehicles for years as a result of my own oil testing. Seems to me all you need is a good synthetic oil, like Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec for your bike and you're good to go.

I agree Ecip.

Data may be 20 years old but doesn't surprise me. I use Rotella. Bike has run great since I switched to it. 12.00 a gallon, 2000m intervals. Remind me again why I would pay 4x that for an oil that will shear 100miles later... That's right I don't...I just dump in more of the cheap stuff. If it can survive in a diesel towing multiple tons of goods, my 700lbs between the KLR and I should be fine.

The thought behind motorcycle oil I thought was always that because a motorcycle has a wet clutch -and- the tranny gears all get lubed by one oil it needs a specific formulation. Doesn't explain though why there are so very many different specifications of oils. I'm sure there's a difference but maybe not much. I myself will still make sure that I use a type of oil the manufacturer calls for, and luckily rotella matches just fine.

I also use the Rotella T in my bike. I'm glad it's there as an option. You can't beat the price compared to motorcycle specific oils.

Sure you can.. Olive oil's only... Never mind..

There's a lot of folks here running Rotella, including myself.. I run it in all of my bikes but the simplest..

I run Mobil 1 Synthetic 10w-40 in my Honda Helix.. I think it's the best oil on the market, and since the Helix holds 8/10th of a quart and has no oil filter, I consider it worth it..

For everything that's going on in a KLR, and my BMW's and Triumph, I like the properties of Rotella..

The Helix is being run WFO about 90% of the time.. I'm sure Rotella would work perfectly in it, but I'm still using the Mobil 1..

Who knows.. I might change.. I've already broken the rules with my Triumph Sprint ST.. It's recommended to use synth or semi synth oil and change at 6K miles.. I'm using Rotella and changing at 3K miles.. Shifting, even with Mobil 1 gets less smooth after 3K, so why not change it when it shifts best?

Good thing we don't have tire wars here..

Great information! I just changed my oil for the first time, using Mobil 1 motorcycle racing oil, and I was discouraged by the price. Takes some of the fun away from getting 55mpg. After reading the article and others on this forum, Iwill at least switch to Mobil 1 for autos, if not Rotella T. I had never heard of Rotella, and am not sure where to find it?

Also, all the MX races I've watched are sponsored by Lucas oil. Anybody running it, and have an opinion?

It's everywhere around here because all the farmers and truckers use it. Can't imagine they wouldn't sell it at Wally World where you live, but if not, any truck stop should have it, although you'll probably pay more for it there.
