She Boiled... Ruined Anything?

First post, and it's an embarrassing one.

I did a silly thing guys...

Forgive me, but I'm still totally unfamiliar with the machine. It's been neglected by the previous owner, so I was surprised by this one.

I just got my KLR used. Started it up, and let it idle in the driveway for a bit. Didn't realize the fan wasn't kicking on.

She got hot, I saw the temp gauge nose into the red, so I shut it off. It boiled over into the coolant bottle.

I let it cool, then I tried it again, mostly out of denial/disbelief... boiled again.

It happened twice for a couple minutes each time. Both times shut the bike off right away.


Question: Did I wreck anything? Is my motor compromised? Ruined?


Please put my nerves at ease: Fingers crossed. Hoping the KLR is tough.

(I got the fan running, which solved my overheating problem)

Welcome to the forums!

Yes, the KLR is very tough! It's Achilles heel is running out of oil, as some of the machines tend to use some.

If your bike is still running ok, not smoking or anything, and the overheating problem is solved I would think it's fine. Now, if you overheated it to the point that it shut itself down, that would be another thing!

I say ride it and keep an eye on your fluid levels and temps, I'm guessing all is fine

Welcome to the forum. Hopefully no permanent harm was done and I agree with 650Stew, but.....If I knew the PO had not taken very good care of the bike I'd be checking everything before riding. If you have the owners manual it will have a list of periodical checks to be done, just give it a good once over. If no manual I'm pretty sure you can download one from Kawasaki's website. If not post back here and someone can direct you.

What year is this bike and what was it causing the fan to not switch on?

She's a 2007. It was just a simple fuse replacement near the coolant bottle. I'm very comfortable rescuing neglected bikes, (had a few in the past!) but wanted to be sure the overheating wasn't instant death for the KLR motor.

I'll be updating the glass fuses with modern ATC style ones in the near future.

Glad to hear it's probably ok. I was counting on the AK47 toughness of the KLR! I'm the kind of guy that will completely disassemble something, clean/repair before I'm comfortable with it. A full inspection is in order, for sure.
