Firing up an old thumper?

I going to need some help from the audience on this one!
(I put this in here because it gets more replies, maybe the nice mods will let'r sit here until we get this sorted out?)

I picked up on old 85 Honda XL350R. Good shape, but the PO parked it in the barn 6 months ago. I have met him before through a friend so I believe him.
The battery is good, he put in new plugs 7 months ago, I've drained the gas and put in some new, drained the bowls on the carbs, let the new gas run in.
I put the heat gun on the carbs hoping it would help break up the gunk.
Kicked her 1000 times but no luck YET.

What are some good general tips to getting a bike up and running that's been sitting awhile?

I have some Seafoam but didn't poor it into the tank because it states to add it to the fuel when the bike is running. I didn't know what would happen if it end up sitting in the tank for a month?
I'm looking for a lazy way to try and get it to show me she has life. If I can get'r running somewhat I'd be more than happy to tear into it in a couple months when I have more time and giver a good cleaning.

What about Pinesol in the carbs? I know I've read something about that being a good cleaner?

Anyone know of any tips specific to the 85 350?

Is it firing at all? You could try squirting some starting fluid into the carbs and seeing if it will light up. I'm guessing you've already checked for spark as well? If it is gunked up carbs though, you will more than likely have to tear them apart and give them a good cleaning before you will get it to run half decently... I just wonder about the sit time though, I've had bikes sit with stale gas in them for over a year and they fired up without too much trouble. I'm thinking this one either sat for a lot longer, or there is something else wrong with it! Keep us updated on how you make out.

The next step if it were me would be to check for spark. Make sure the engine kill switch is not in the off position. I once kicked a XL5oo over for an hour before realizing I had accidentally pushed the kill switch off. Oh and of course the key must be in the ON position!! Unless the carb is completely plugged up you should be getting enough fuel to at least fire. Does it seem to have compression when you kick it over? Was it running when it was parked?

It was running when parked. I haven't checked spark. I have little time for toys for a few months, so I just jumped right in and hoped to get lucky.
It has an auto compression release on the kicker, so you don't feel hard compression. Same setup that was on my xl250.

Anyone have experience with Seafoam? I thought about putting some in the tank and letting it ooze down into the carbs, hoping it would loosen them up some.

I'll have to pull the plugs and check for spark when I have time.

Be careful when you remove the sparkplug and you might see a small flake of carbon bridging the gap between the center electrode and ground strap. I have found that before. I cant believe that 7 months of sitting would gum up a carb to the point that the engine wont even fire. Or I suppose its carbs!

I use it, but believe it's more of a "stabilizer" for storage. I'm pretty confident it wouldn't do anything to help clear out any gunk that's already there. Good luck with getting it running.

She's got a healthy spark! Time to get a new plug and HOPE.

From the little I've read, this particular bike is tricky to start in good working order.
When it's been sitting awhile with bad gas, well as you know, it's even tougher.

Well, I swear by seafoam. And I would never add it while the bike is running. I put some in every once in a while. On my old Honda, I worked on that bike forever and it wouldn't run right. Dumped a can of SF in and let it blow a crapload of black smoke out and it ran like a dream.
