What to do?

I sold my beloved 09 KLR. I am having a knee replacement surgery in a couple of weeks and won't be riding til spring. I plan to buy a new 2012 KLR to be delivered in March. Here is my question. My 09 had an FMF Muffler and jet kit installed and I liked it a lot. I've been told that I shouldn't change the exhaust until after the break in period and 600 mile service. Why? I can' see what it would hurt. What do you think?

Why indeed.

The break-in is all about keeping the revs in check for a while and trying to get the rings properly seated.

I should think a properly jetted bike, with richer-than-stock AFR would not hurt anything in that regard. The stock jetting is a bit leanish.

About the only draw-back I could see would be if the mixture were stupid-rich and interfered with oil retention on the cylinder walls from unburnt fuel. I think that would be well outside the realm of possibility with your jet kit. Stupid-rich can result from old age - not being able to distinguish between a "4" and a "6" on a jet pulled form the pile-o-jets. I would prefer your not asking how I know that...

Tom....I can recommend a good eye specialist.....lol....yep....got me a real nice set of specs now too....lol. I have always said it must be the worst thing I can think of to go blind......personally....now I am wearing glasses and had to upgrade them after the first year ....now at 54....I'm thinking it maybe time to go again.....good thing she is a stupidliy georgous woman who wears basically spandex pants!!! Yep...eyes are still good enough to see her!....What a PIG I am....lol. I hate glasses!

Damn sorry nearly forgot to post something related to the question asked.....I agree with Tom....as long as the mixture is good...there shouldn't be any issue.....regulated revs and plenty of engine braking to seat the rings....and it's golden...
