Is it a good deal??

Hi all, tomorrow I'm going to buy a 2009 KLR from the original owner. It is in very nice condition, totally stock(oh well, at least I can equip it the way I want) and has just 3,800 miles for $3500.00. Seems like a good deal, what do you guys think?

I say this to everyone who asks this question......if you are happy with the price....please do not tell us....there will always be someone who will chime in and say....oh I could have gotten the same bike for so much less!

Don't give them the satisfaction of ruining your purchase, which I think is sound!

The only thing you need to do is try and feel what the seller is all about.
Saying that, look at him, his clothes, his house, his yard, his toys and other vehicles......if he hasn't taken much care with those...why would he take care of this item? Ask him if the bike has ever been run low on oil and watch his face....look at his eyes and see if he flinches.....that is your only main concern here along with a good title. Engine that have run very low on oil will need to have the cam bearings looked at before dropping the cash on them. The exhaust cam bearings are the first to go bad. Then the rest go, then the main bearings, but those take a lot of abuse. I would doubt this has happened. Burp the throttle a few time after it has warmed up....if you see any signs of blue smoke either walk or run away! A new or used head isn't cheap! Plus you will need a rebore to a 685 or similar.....but the 685 is builitproof as far as I'm concerned. To each their own.

So, do your best and make the best deal you can...and ride happy without tell us how much. Because if you are happy, that's all that matters right!

Good deal according to NADA values. Still no reason to just fork over asking price........start at $3,000 cash (respectfully) and see how motivated he is to sell.

You don't get what you don't ask for!!!

I'm with Willys. I'm not going to tell you if your purchase is sound or not but..........

Just remember that buying a bike with mods included can be a very smart move, as you can end up saving large. I have spent at least 100% of my 09 purchase price on mods, does that mean I thrash my bike; no, it means I love my bike and make sure her every need is met.

IMHO look for a very nice modded bike, say with a 685/705, crash guards, maybe heated grips, a better seat, taller wind screen and save huge. Just the three mods I have mentioned would cost you up to $1,500.00+, not including labour, Stage II heads, exhaust, etc, etc. Yes the seller would try to recoup some of the cost of the mods but would be lucky to get back 25%.

Just an option. Goodluck

I always like to ask the seller if the Doohickey has been done and then watch their reaction. Tells you a lot about their KLR knowledge.

The guy I bought my first KLR from didn't buy into the Doohickey issue. Looked at it as an Internet hoax. When I opened it up to change it I found that he had adjusted it incorrectly and the starter gear had worn a bit of metal off of it. I suspect it made some noise when he started it and that he sold the bike as a result. My gain though. I've rode it many happy miles.

"It's a friggen motorcycle, it's not supposed to be comfortable, quiet or safe. The wind noise is supposed to hurt your ears, the seat should be hard and riding it should make you shit your pants every now and then. "
