Question Here's what I'm looking at buying....mileage question?

I can't post a link because I'm new to the forum but I'm looking at a KLR at a dealership. The pictures look great but after getting in contact with the salesman, it has 64,297 miles! I have very little knowledge of bikes but this seems high. I've done a search and saw guys with 80+ miles but even there, i'm only 15000 miles away! I know this is subjective, and I know that I could buy a brand new one that could be a lemon, but realistically, what do you guys think? I will be using this bike as an occasional commute (30 miles, round trip). Any advice is appreciated.

Too bad you're not near Utah... To the best of my knowledge, the small dealership where I purchased my 2012 KLR new had a Blue 2009 KLR with just over 1,600 miles on it for something like $4,600.

Yep... They've still got it listed on their website.

It's about halfway down on the right.

That bike would need to be almost free....or very close to it for me to jump at it. Sure many bikes have gone well past that number, but what were those miles like? Many bikes have died with less that a 1/3 of that number from poor maintenance......If the bike appears to be like new externally, the internal issues could be huge. At best a 685 kit and a complete valve job would be my best guess needed. Worst a new head and possibly crank bearings.....which would make it scrap IMHO.
If you could just type out the link, we could find it to give you a better idea.....but at the moment we are guessing in the dark.

Agree with Willy's. If it is $500, has new tires and immaculate plastic go for it. Otherwise stay away.

You didn't mention the price which is important. We have no secrets here and the price will be the best indicator for a Yay or Nay.

PM me the link and I will post it for you.

Here is the link to the bike in question which is selling for a listed price of $3500.

http://www.southernhonda.com/m/showc...49683&status=2

My comments from just a quick look follow. My advice is you can get a much less used bike for the same money. I would want to see a comprehensive maintenance record with that kind of mileage. I would sell my 2004 in nicer condition with 18,000 miles for that price.

Comments:

- rear tire is about 50% worn
- rear signal on left has been replaced. original likely got knocked off in a spill or ...
- doesn't appear to have a windshield

It looks to be in good shape for the mileage but the picture size and quality is lacking so really hard to say. Be patient. Your bike is out there.

I would agree with willys and klr4evr: that price is way too high.
I am aware of a nearby '08 with 7000 miles, listed for $3400.
And an '09 with 12,000 for $4100.
That said, I know prices can vary depending upon your location (and I don't know the conditions).

If this is close to you (SW Missouri) it's a much better bike for a little more money. Has 7500 miles. Advertised next door on the .net site.
