gas cap vent

Has anyone had any luck modifying the gas cap to be the only tank vent?

What is this plate that is used when you disconnect the air injection system?

My bike back fires constantly on deceleration.

Welcome Lance.
I cannot help you with the vented gas cap or the plate questions.
However, you might want to consider the 22 Cent Mod to help eliminate the back-firing on decel. The back-firing is common with the KLR.
The stock carburetion runs a bit lean. The 22 Cent Mod will richen it up a bit. When I did mine, the back-firing on decel pretty much stopped.
But the best part is the improved throttle responce!
You can get good info on the modification here: http://www.klrforum.com/showthread.php?t=12596

I'm going to go out on a limb here to try and remember enough to help you. Years ago I helped my brother take the air pump off his 08. We capped the tube at the head with a vacuum cap from a Holly carburetor kit. I think you can buy those little vacuum cap kits at any auto parts store. We zip tied the cap on to make sure it stayed. Ive read of people crimping off the tube but don't like that idea because that is permanent. The cap can always be taken off. We then threaded a bolt into the end of the rubber hose from the other side of the pump. Put a zip tie around the hose just below the bolt head for good measure and then zip tied the hose out of the way. Put the air pump on a shelf in case he ever felt like he wanted to put it back on. If you don't cap off that hose and tube it will suck air and pop like crazy on deceleration. We did the $.22 cent mod and an after market exhaust at the same time and had to bump up the idle just a tad to get rid of that last little pop when he let off the gas.

As for the tank vents I took the little orange O rings out of the gas cap on my 05 to help it vent better. I don't know if the newer bikes have the same kind of gas cap or not. I didn't really notice any difference but I have read about guys who had issues with the cap not venting well. The cap will leak now if I tip it on it side but I try to avoid that.

It may seem an outlandish claim, but mine hasn't backfired once in the almost three years since I did the .22 Mod in conjunction with the Redneck Exhaust Mod.

Mine wasn't a Save The Planet Edition KLR, though, so that emissions setup wasn't a factor for me.

My 05 never did pop before I did the $.22 mod or since even with the after market exhaust. It has a nice throaty growl on deceleration. I think it sounds better than on acceleration. The 05 also was old enough that I didnt have the airpump set up.

Check you exhaust header to cylinder connection. If it's sucking air it will cause backfiring.

My 08 doesn't backfire pre or post .22 mod.

I made my own block off plate for the head. I heard Eagle Mike carries them. My bike back fired until I got rid of all the smog crap. Most of my riding is between 5000 and 6000 elevation. I ran a gas tank vent hose from; I think the left side tube on the tank out the bottom of the bike. Blocked off right side tube.
