Buy with out a good test drive???

It's about weather.....the 10 day forecast high is about 30, ice still on some roads, but I wanna look at bikes from a few private parties. I will be able to do a test drive, but not a long one. I hate to miss a good deal.
I've never driven a klr, but I have had xt500 back about 20 years ago, so I really know Ill like the bike. I'm 6'2" with long legs, about 220 lbs. I sat on both new and used, and it fits well.
Thoughts???

Welcome.

Sounds like you know what you want. Go for it if you feel the bike is mechanically sound after riding it and you're getting a good enough deal to live with.

Of course you will be getting biased opinions from this bunch but they are great bikes for the purpose they were built.

Gray-haired riders donít get that way from pure luck.

I am pretty much committed to buying a KLR sight unseen as well. Not too worried because a trusted friend knows the bike well and has worked on it.

I bought mine without a test drive. heard it run in the garage, really dug into the engine ie oil, mechanical lines, air filter, tires and pressure, chain and sprockets, etc... came down in price when I sat on it and tested suspension and the slack in the chain. Of course he had paperwork on all mechanical work done including the doohicky so I bought it. lots-o-changes later I have just over 20k miles and I bought it with 16k. Love it!

If you have your choice avoid the 08-09 model as much as possible. Most but not all of them burn a lot of oil. My 08 burns a lot on the hiway. But otherwise it's an awesome bike. You will love the KLR. Great bikes and lots of mods. welcome to the forum!

You shouldn't need much more than a 1000 yards to find out if the bike is a good one or not. If it rides true and steers true, brakes work, suspension feels right....the rest is just a good look over. This subject about buying a bike has many threads, search it out and read what we recommend you look for. Obviously signs of wear and tear, abuse and oil, burning. Buy one as clean as humanly possible for your price limit. Also keep $500 aside for the 685 kit just in case if you buy an 08-10...imho. You may get lucky but most will over time burn the oil. It's an easy fix.....so please don't let that scare you off.

All good points to consider. One thing I will also do buying used. Remove the oil fill plug and the radiator cap to look under them and see if there is any evidence of emulsification of oil and water indicating a problem. Quick and easy before you test ride.
