KLR vs Deer

Deer wins...

I was riding home last Tuesday from work when all of a sudden something hit me out of nowhere! Before I knew what was going on, I was riding in the ditch beside the road and then my front tire hit a log causing me to launch from the bike hitting a hill and tumbling for about 15 ft. When I finally stopped tumbling and I looked back to see my KLR in the ditch upside down and a dead deer about 10 ft behind it. Up to that point I had no clue what had happened or what had hit me. There was a driveway a little bit down the street that had 8 to 10 ft fence around it and that is where the deer had to have came from.

My bike seems to be ok other than the front end out of wack and the brake lever needs to be replaced. I ended up braking my right leg in two places (upper tibia and fibula (sp?)) and will not be able to ride or drive for 6 to 8 weeks (according to the doctor)!

I was wearing a helmet (of coarse), leather racing gloves, Joe Rocket Ballistic Jacket but because I am an idiot, I was not wearing MC boots or my riding pants but instead had on mid rise steel toe boots and khaki pants. I am not sure if wearing the pants and boots would have saved me from braking my leg but I will never ride again without all my gear!

REMEMBER ATGATT!!!

OOOOUCH!!! Glad you're still alive.

This is just a reminder that Autum brings out the Deer Jerky. Keep alert around Dawn and Dusk.

Yeah, the deer came out of nowhere! I had no clue what was going on. I first thought maybe something had went wrong with the bike because I never saw anything and I am a very catious rider. I have seen deer before in this area and have even had to make emergency stops due to deer. I have crashed bikes before but they were more controlled because I saw what was getting ready to happen and prepared myself. This time was totally scary because I was TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL!

I am really glad your not serious, or worst off.

I would like to ask some questions. I dont like riding the mountain roads because of this. So I would like to learn something here.

did the dear hit you or you hit the dear.

can you think of any thing that could of helped the situation. I am not sure pants would have made a diff. what part of the lane wear you riding in and how fast were you going. Where you going around a blind corner?

I hope your injueries heal fast and straight and your able to ride soon!!

thanks

Hey klr/dale and fatrat. Hope yall get better soon. Last weekend a chaser dog scared the chit out of me running out to the road to chase me down the street. That was just a dog, I know what a deer can to do the bumper of an 18 wheeler first hand, so I am glad you 2 are still with us. FWIW, If you see a deer, aint much you can do, except SLOW and try to stop! This dear was standing in the middle of the highway in the right lane pointing toward the shoulder, as I was traveling thru MS. Now I am prolly 78-79,000 pds loaded. I see the deer way off and brake(safely) and actually manage to get into the left lane. I mean just as I am getting close to the deer it does a 180 and jumps into the truck. Anyway, I pulled over as soon as I could slowed and took care of business, and part of the bumper was holding by a few fiberglass threads. A deer caught in the headlights, really means something.

Anyway, hope yall are back on 2 legs(and wheels) soon. I think now through about February are the most dangerous months to hit a deer. So, everyone be careful out there. I am glad you 2 posted to "remind" me and the rest of us.

Oh yeah, thats a classic. "At least you got a kill", from one KLR deer hunter to another.
