Found a KLR, but...

Have looked around for one to see whats available, gave up on a newer green one at least for the moment.

Soon as i did, I found an older KLR its the color scheme from about '93. Anyone know of any particular areas to look at when deciding to buy. Turns out this one forsale is 6 miles from my house. No one was home yesterday, so I will go back sometime over the weekend, its pouring today. So I'll wait until it dries up a bit.

Just mainly wanted to know how these hold up, if there are any major problems with them etc.

TIA

If it were me, I'd stick with '96 and newer. However, if it's a good deal, then it's a good deal. They pretty much are all the same. However, '96 and newer they pretty much left them alone after some minor modifications.

Changed valve cover, added bracket to hold cam chain bumper; changed crank to heavier unit; improved clutch basket with more clutch plates; changed countershaft sprocket retainer from slotted plate to large nut. And a tad more electrical power due to larger stator.

This ones in pretty good shape for the age, and less than 10K miles, the guy got to where he couldnt ride anymore and didnt want sell thinking he would ride again someday and the bike has set for the last several years, only to be ridin around the yard 2 times a week every week.

I think the price is right so I just might pick it up.

I have a 92 and it has very few things different from a new bike except the engine is black instead of the newer bronze or silver look. I think the countersprocket has a slightly different washer or locknut assembly .... easier to get off than the new ones I heard.

Anyway I'm pushing 36K and it runs like a top. I would head for anywhere on it. I have that much confidence in her.

Of course you would want to find out if the balancer lever was replaced.....not that this should stop you from buying if interested. Just a plus if its already changed out. This is really the only weak point from a mechanical standpoint. An on going issue with KLR fans. Most have opted for Eaglemikes aftermarket doohickey and done the doo even on brand new machines.

Plus.... I know you would want to REPAINT that lovely paint scheme from Japan. The early 90's had a few "colorful" looks that were less than popular.

You should be able to get a 93 for a great price if its good mechanically.

I bought mine for $1600 a few years back.

Just think.... you might be farkelized and brainwashed overnight.
Waiting with baited breath.......

There are 3 colors I really do not like on a bike and white is 2 of them, the base on this one is white so it would get some paintbooth time.

The price is less then $1600, buy about $600 so if I can get the key and see the running order of the thing I might just pounce on it, but of course it has to make it through one of my test rides

I will tell you right now that few KLR's go for that price at any age. They can part the thing out for more that that! Do the deed if it runs good and you give it the thumbs up!! :!:

I've spoke to them over the phone and even went to look at it yesterday but no one home, just havent had a chance to see it running, hopeing to do so sometime over the weekend. Just got the hospital bill from the wifes stay and even with insurance I could buy a really nice late model, but thats just the way it goes.

klr650,
$1k for a 93 is a great deal if she runs good. I give $1k for my 91' klr250 and feel like I got a killer deal.
They are tough and reliable, and you meet the nicest people on a KLR.

I just did a quickie search for you... in Dalton, GA there's a 2004 for $3800. Only has 3200 miles on it.

In Marietta, GA there's a 2002 for $3900. It has 9000 miles on it. (That's about 5k fewer than mine and I've got an '06)

There's a 2004 in Snellville with only 1800 miles on it for $4k

There's another 2004 in Marietta for $3600 with only 4600 miles on it.

How hard are ya lookin'
