Is it true that the KLR650 is made by Kymco?

My local dealer told me the other day that the KlR was made for Kawasaki by Kymco. It kinda made me a little mad, If I wanted a Kymco I would have bought a Kymco. Hope I'm not beating a dead horse here but was wondering if this is true.

First I've ever heard of it... I do know that they moved assembly to Thailand but I think they're still put together in a Kawasaki factory.

Kymco is a Taiwan Company that builds cheaper ATV's and Scooters.
The issue would be I paid for a kawasaki and wouldn't like it if it's really a Kymco.

Hey Jeff!
Kymco is a chinese manufacturer of scooters and motorcycles. I've never heard of them assembling the KLR before. I doubt it's true as Kymco is based in Taiwan and KLR's are assembled in Thailand. At least the newer ones are, not sure when they switched from Japanese assembly.

I guess the issue would be possibly poor or shoddy assembly if Kymco was building them. The BMW F650 engine is made in a chinese facility though, so I think they've really improved from what they used to be like.

I'm sure if the KLR's were assembled by Kymco we would have heard it long ago so I think this dealer was either misinformed or had his wires crossed .

I sure hope he was misinformed. The owner of the dealership even said the crates the KLR's were shipped in has Kymco on them.

Lol, I'd have to see one of those crates to believe it

Oh, side note, I was wrong when I associated them with Chinese bikes, your right, they are strictly Taiwanese. Supposedly of much higher quality than Chinese products.

Makes me wonder though, why the heck would the dealer say that?

I'm with you on that, I'd like to see one myself.
I have know idea why he told me that, it kinda set wrong with me when he did. I know it's not that big of a deal, but I feel like if it's true the customer has a right to know it.

I'm not buying it. I WISH Kymco made the KLR. They made parts for Honda for years and my Kymco 150 scooter was BULLETPROOF. I wish I still had it. That thing was awesome.
