Super Sherpa or DR250

I just applied to grad school.

When I ask the magic eight ball if I will get in it says "As I see it Yes"
( Plus the faculty like me and I hear they are hurting for grad students )

So my plans to purchase a KLR650 may be dealyed for two years. I do have my Suzuki Samurai and various other car parts to sell that might net me $2500. (maybe more, I'm not a very omptimistic person)

I might be able to get a Super Sherpa or a DR250 or both well within my price range. Do you guys thing one of them would haul my 6'1", 280 pound carcass around? I don't need to go faster than 60mph but I would like to ride from Michgian to New Hampshire this summer to visit my sister and her husband, on the back roads of course

Later,
Brian

The dr would be a dr 200. No it wouldn't be a good choice. The SS wold be OK, but you can find a used KLR for about the same money as a SS. The Yamaha xt 225 would be another choice, and all three would do what you want, but they are small for the long hauls.

And I hope your happy with the cold weather we are having, I liked the 60,s and 70,s.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.

My wife has a super sherpa and it'll haul you down the road @ 70mph, no problem. The 6 speed tranny makes it work. How comfortably, I'm not so sure. I'm 6' and the sherpa feels a bit cramped to me. The only other rub I would point out is the lack of aftermarket parts for the sherpa. The only rear rack available is tiny! So hauling any kind of luggage is iffy at best.
If I were in your boat, I'd put in the hours and find a used KLR650. They're out there in your price range! If you decide in a couple years that you want a new one, you'll be able to sell a good used one without difficulty. Also, I paid $2000 for a '00 sherpa, so they don't give 'em away.
Hope this helps!

Thanks guys.

I'm pretty sure I could get a killer deal on the two bikes. The DR doesn't run but I'm sure its something minor, and the SS has some broken plastics but nothing that can't be fixed.

However I may be able to pick up an ('84 I think) KLR600. They are asking for $700, it belongs to my friends brother who is keeping it in my friends garage. So if they just want to get it outta there I'm betting $500 would take it. Do you guys know anything about the 600's? I have to call on it tomorrow to see if its still there.

There is also a '86 CB650 that bogs at full throttle. One of the guys in our motorcycle club rode it and said it was probably that the carbs were out of sync. They are asking $350 for that. I'd really like a DS but the price is pretty attractive. I could always throw knobbies or mefo's on it

Thanks again, I appreciate the insight.
Brian

PS: Daddyjoe, I'm pretty happy with our temps and snow. We have less than a month before our winter carnival and I was wondering if we were going to have to make statues out of frozen squirrels. We've finally got enough snow for me to break out my snowshoes tomorrow

The Sherpa is more current technology than the Dr200 so it would prolly seem like a better bike in the long run. But, with your size I'm thinkin the KLR600 would be a better fit if the older bike can still be trusted as far as reliablility.

I called my buddy about the KLR600 the other day. Turns out his friend who owns it has never seen it run, and they are having a hard time finding a petcock to replace the leaky on it has. They want $500 for it. I don't know if I need another non-running project. I've got enouph of those as it is  I think I'm going to think about it for a while. My goal this summer is to be able to make the trip to New Hampsire so I may hold out for something that may be more reliable.

Yep. They have been trying to get rid of me for a while but there is an awful lot of beer to drink and I'd feel bad not drinking my share.

Find a bike, any bike, and we'll get some riding in this summer.
