Question on warranty

I just got my 07, and im wondering if you guys let your local dealer do the first few oil changes or if you do it yourself. The warranty isnt very explicit in wether they void it if you do your oil yourself. I mean heck, if we werent supposed to do it ourselves why would they tell us how to do it in the manual? I'm planning on doing the rough break in method so i'll need to change my oil and filter at about 50 miles, but my nearest kawi dealer is like 15 miles away, so would it void my warranty if i just change oil at 50mi, then go there and have them do the 500mi oil change so its on record?

Any input is greatly appreciated!!

Thanks, Jon

421.... I never ever let a dealer touch my bike unless I have my back against the wall. Especially an oil change. You are allowed to change your own oil and filter. Even if the dealer did it and failed to put the oil back in they would just tell you that you failed to keep a check on the oil level and its your baby. Thats the nature of most dealerships.
When you take it in for warranty work... always inspect it from tip to stern after they give it back. Trust nobody. You will come out ahead everytime.

Most dealers know very little about the KLR anyway. Very little.

Buy a set of manuals from Kawasaki and start wrenching. Your confidence level will soar. Ask all the questions you have here and don't worry about bugging people. We have already been there and done that so we are able and willing to lend a hand. Plus... do a tech day as soon as possible. In no time you will be changing your own tires, brakes, sprockets and chain..valves ect..... yehaw!!

For the warranty you should keep the receipts of the oil and filters, and keep a GOOD record of when and what you do to it. ( that will help you in years to come too, and if you ever decide to sell it it will give you a big + to the buyer.

As for voiding the warranty, you doing the maint will not effect it, (keep records)even doing the DOO won't void your warranty.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.

Wow, really? This is great, im so glad i didnt buy the 4yr extended warranty, it just seems like a waste on a new bike, ecspecially when i can do most my own work. The salesperson(although very nice) tried way to hard to push it, and i kept telling him i know how to work on motors, but he just wasnt listening; "well its only 490 and you get 5 full years of coverage, thats coverage for the life of the loan". Sometimes i hate salesmen, oh wait, i am a salesman, lol. Ye i sell appliances at home depot.

Just because nobody mentioned it, but make SURE you grab the metal tube out of the old filter and install it in the new filter before putting it back in the bike.

Easy little item to overlook.
