Has anyone tested the '08 HT engine guard?

I just saw a picture of one on a green 2008 KLR, but I'm not sure about that side mount and wanted to know if anybody has tried it yet.

Also, if there's a hard-point for the side of the guard, is there room for a big ole' honkin' frame slider there instead?

2008 Nerf Bars

Greetings!

Since I live in Boise, Idaho, I've actually seen the 2008 KLR owned by Tim, the owner of Happy Trails. It looks nice and appears to be very functional. If I had a 2008, I'd get the Happy Trails Nerf bars. I have a 2007 with their nerf bar system. Since the 2008 is so new, I think you will be pressed to find anyone that has gone down yet testing the nerf bars. It sure looks sturdy enough and looks to be attached to the frame. You might give Tim a call and ask further.

Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "a hard-point for the side of the guard. . . .big ole' honkin' frame slider. . . "

Hope that helps.

Regards

What I meant was, where the guard mounts to the frame through the hole/vent in the plastics, could you mount a frame slider there instead of the guard? Just something to keep the plastics off the ground in a tip-over.

Thanks for reply, though.

Follow up . . .

Greetings!

Yes, it looked to be connected to the frame. I hope that helps. Again, call HT and ask for Capt. Ed. He's a great guy and won't stir you wrong.

Regards

Our dealer in town just got an 08 a couple of days ago. From what I could tell the engine guard is made out of the same type plastic as the others, but it comes way up higher on the engine in front. The motor mount is the same, but it has some metal gussets that come out and help support the bigger guard in the front. I don't see why, with a little imagination you couldn't make something work.

Previous ride was a 2007 KLR Black/Silver, I miss it..
Looking to get back into KLR's sometime soon.

Attention all,

I have gone down with the HT Nerf bars on my '08. Went down at slow speed in soft sand. The rear cross bar component bent into the radiator! Fortunately it did not damage the radiator as I was 1 day into a 3 day trip into Death Valley.

Upon returning I contacted Tim of HT by e-mail of the problem, I never got a response. I called him and he said "hmm...I thought I got back to you...maybe not". Then Tim proceeds to tell me that they are aware of the problem and that they would have new cross supports in a couple of weeks. That was the end of March. I still do not have the replacements. Even after continued contact with HT they have forgotten to send me the replacements.
They have now promised me a possible ship date of June 4th. They sent out all of the first replacement batch to other people, or so they say. I think they filled new orders and neglected their obligation to make good on the original trash they shipped on the first sets.

If you see Tim, tell him Kevin Miller in California says, "where are my replacement cross supports!".

Pretty poor customer service and follow up.

Good luck should you do business with HT.
