Doohickey question

Hello everybody! I have been lurking around the site & toying with the idea of buying a 2013 or 2014 KLR. My question is, do the newer models still require the doohickey mod? I appreciate any help!

Thanks,
Pikester

Welcome indeed, Pikester!

No 2008 or later OEM doohickeys have failed, AFAIK; and . . . I know of no maintenance issue directly attributable to the latter-day factory part (although some consider the shaft clearance critical, more optimal with the aftermarket part). The aftermarket doohickey has greater adjustment range than the OEM component.

Spring tension issues have surfaced with Generation 2 KLR650s; Eagle Mike's "torsion" spring offers superior performance compared with the factory spring.

FULL DISCLOSURE: Eagle Mike doohickey and torsion spring installed on my Generation 1 KLR650.

Your call on upgrading your doohickey; if you choose to do so, you'll get a part with better fit (tighter on shaft) and finish, and increased adjustment range. I'd consider an aftermarket spring of higher priority than an aftermarket doohickey on a Generation 2 KLR650; as mentioned, your call!
