klx650c starting problem after just shut it off

hope i am here at the good location.

Hi there,

Got a little problem with my klx 650 C.
had this problem before. ( and rebuild the carb and put some new parts in it )

The problem :
Drove the bike on a ferry ( little one ) after 5 minutes we are at the other side and the bike won't fire up again.
I can start it till the battery is empty... nothing.

If i then wait 2 hours, the bike starts like nothing happend.

What could this be ?
It will fire up now with no problem, but if i kill the bike and try again later in 5 min it will not fire up.
What can i do ?

Thanxs

Is it flooded?

When you are trying to start it and it won't, what does it sound like? What does the exhaust (or rather the tailpipe) smell like? Are you using choke?

If it's flooded, you may be able to get it to start by using full choke until it starts, then backing off the choke as you need.

What could cause it to be flooded after running awhile? I dunno, maybe faulty petcock? Float needles? Float height?

The idle circuit is separate from all else; might check the pilot jet to make sure it's clear.

Also, what about adjusting the pilot screw (the thingy on the underside of the carb, near the engine)? Around 1.75 turns out from a soft bottoming might be a good starting point.

thanxs for the info.
here is some more info from my part :

when i want to start it and it wont start, it sounds normal.
The engine turns normal, no weird smell, and don't use the choke.

i walked home... waited 2 hours... and it started right away.

could it be flooded, i don't know.

Wil look if everything is clear and wil try the pilot screw.

And next time i will try it with full choke.

Thanxs, will post an update if i have one.

Good idea! Actually, it ain't really a "choke!" A genuine choke restricts air intake, producing a fuel-rich mixture; the "starting enricher" on the KLR comprises a sort of mini-carburetor.

When you turn your "choke" lever to the ON position, a cable withdraws a plunger from a hole in the carburetor, permitting fuel to flow; simultaneously, withdrawing the plunger uncovers an air passage. The fuel from the opened hole in the carb, and air from the uncovered passage mixes; this fuel-rich mixture is introduced directly into the carburetor venturi to facilitate starting.

The operation of the starting enricher ("choke") and the rest of the CVK40 carburetor is described more eloquently and in detail at
http://www.gadgetjq.com/keihin_carb.htm.

Bottom line: Nothing wrong with using full "choke" to start your KLR.

was working on the bike and thought i would also do a new spark plug and airfilter.

first the spark plug, put in a new one..
The old one is not looking good...
Why is it looking like this ?
to mutch fuel, to mutch air ?

And then the airfilter.
It is a k&n, cleaned it, and put on some airfilter oil ( from k&n )
now i see i miss the top part of the air box.
Is that a huge problem?
or do i need to make it air tight ?

Tommorow putting back together the carb.

Cylinder head valves, I should think.

As in, valve clearance (aka valve lash).

The valve's where good, not to mutch clearance etc.

So i think that is good.
Or do i need to watch it again ?
