What Is This?

I was looking around for something else and found an envelope that had some paperwork from when I bought my KLR; stuff I wasn't too concerned about like the MSF You And Your Motorcycle Riding Tips "handbook."

It has a number on it. My best guess is this is the thing I would need if I lost my keys and had to get a new one cut?

Yes, its how they mint you a new key from the factory if necessary. The black thing is simply a key cover.

I guess I'd better put it somewhere a little more appropriate. I'm probably damned lucky I just happened to stumble across it before I lost it.

You might want to write the number down somewhere safe like in your manual or on the title.

Well, I didn't think it qualified for the safe deposit box at the bank, but I did put it in our little fireproof box in the basement so at least I know where it is. I've still got 2 keys so the chances of needing it are slim to none, but if that scenario was going to happen to anybody, it would happen to me....

planalp,
I'd recommend that you write the number into your owners handbook, if the dealership did not. (there is a spot)
I'd also recommend that you Tape the metal tag onto your Title.
Also, get a third key made and hide it on the bike, somewhere accessed with minimal tools. (tail light lens / air filter, dab of silicone)

Next go to Kawasaki.com, owners info, to see if the dealership recorded it during warranty registration, (may NOT be available here).

Or go to a K dealer, with your VIN, and have them check on line to see if the key code was registered.

GET THAT SHIT TATTOOED ON YOUR FOREHEAD LIKE A MAN!

Giving your spare key to a friend works well too. I have Mark B4s and he has mine. I could get it to him easily (he only lives an hour away), but yeah, the # is good to have.

I also keep a spare in my riding jacket.

If that's a keynumber then keep it in a safe place.

When I got my KLR it had no key so I was forced to disassemble the Ingition switch to get to it - luckily for me my bike was old enough to have it imprinted there. Besider I've read somewhere that it's better to get a spare key cut to that number instead of copying the old and used key.

It's a real saver
