Dallas to Cabo

Hi everyone!
First off, THIS PLACE IS AWESOME!! I have been lurking for a while gathering info about these bikes and have learned so much. The bad thing is that I'm unfortunately a dyed-in-the-wool redneck. If any of you have ever been around our kind you know that all you have to do is suggest something crazy and,"I'M IN!!!! WAHOOOOO!!!!!!!!"

This time I can't wait.

I took a vacation in '05 with my wife and some friends. We spent seven days in Cabo and we loved it. I got home and continued researching the area and found out that the Baja 1000 is comming to Cabo. I also ran across a movie I had wanted to see but never had the time,Dust to Glory, WOW!!! If you are here reading this and haven't seen it, stop right now and go rent it. I saw it 9 months ago and still can't stop thinking about it.

So I'm thinking.....leave Dallas for Cabo on 11/10/07, That gives me 3 days to get through copper canyon, acroos The Sea of Cortez to La Paz and around to Cabo before the first racers get there (The race starts 11/12/07).

My passport is on the way, I bought a green '08, I bought a Gia Roji, and I'm making my checklist and breaking in a wonderful bike that is making my ass hurt.

Thanks to everyone for all the info I have already gained and I can only imagine what kind of a stink that this half-baked idea is going to stir up.

I'm planning the run solo, just because none of my friends think that it is possible. I kinda like the idea of going alone, but all my loved ones would like for me to have a riding buddy. I know this is a good idea and that is why I'm posting this message.

I also would like to know what some more expierenced touring riders think, and would suggest I do, or buy for the bike, or take with me.

Am I crazy???

Go it alone. Nobody eats dust all day, stop when you want, etc..I treasure my trips with my pals, but sometimes alone is great!!

3 days might not be enough time. It just isn't safe to ride after dark down there..too many critters running around. The days are short that time of year too.

I tend to plan for the worst when alone. Food for 3-4 days of walking that you can carry, shoes that you can walk in, the ability to make safe drinking water.

Think/plan smart and you'll be fine.

Lovin your pics of the NW on the report on ADV.

Didn't think about the shorter days. Thanks!!!

I prefer a hand pump water filter to get rid of the bacterias. Watch my report over the next few days and you'll see it in use.

Yeah, MRE's are great..you get coffee and salt and stuff that way..matches too.

I have to agree with Larryboy on the water pump.I do alot of solo ridin in the east.I use a Katydin water pump.Good for 200 gal before filter change. Most tablets take anywhere from1/2 an hour to hour to work. One rule I use is pack like your backpacking,'cause you may have to walk out,or worse.

Happy Trails
and
enjoy your adventure

I'll look for you on the trip. A buddy of mine and I are heading out from Colorado on the 5th. Copper Canyon etc. Meet the wives in Cabo watch then end of the 1000. Then find our way back to Colorado.
Along with the passport, you will need current registration for the bike and title for the bike. If you have a loan on the bike get a letter from the title holder saying it's OK for you to take the bike into Mainland Mexico. You will also need this stuff for the ferry back from Baja to the mainland.
Have fun.

Just a side note,, you might want to get Mexican insurance,,before you depart the states, it is cheaper to get it here and have it with you, then to buy it at the border,
I have heard that not having Mexican insurance is the same as being uninsured, and you dont want that happening there.
Not trying to be paranoid but I have a few friends that go every year, and that is what I have been told

Hey guys thanks for the replies and info, I was gettin lonely.

Earlbob,
Cool brother, I'll be lookin for ya,watcha ridin? I'm prolly gonna leave a day earlier (11/09/07) because of the shorter days in the winter time. I don't want to push it too hard. Got my passport, all I have for the bike is a reciept and the copy of the cashiers check I bought it with, I might get the real title before I leave but I'm not sure.

Are you going to cross the Sea of Cortez @ Los Mochis/Topolabampo?

How much is the ferry ride for me and my bike?

Do you know where I can find a schedule?

JakesKLR,
Thanks man I found this in a forum I was surffin,

https://apache.secure.mexicaninsuran...tml?aff_id=RWO

Seems like a good deal? About $50 for standard coverage and about $90 for extended coverage. Don't know, never bought meskin insurance before!

490 miles on the bike.

Goin to Big Bend next weekend. Gonna pre-run my get-outta-town route, lay down a GPS trail, see what kinda time I'm lookin at getting to the border, finish breakin in the bike.

Hey, is my '08 gonna be the first one across the border? I'd love to be the first one across.

Psyclops,
07 blk KLR, Riding partner is on a KTM 950. Yep, we're taking the ferry from Topo. Google Baja, LaPaz, Ferry. You get a bunch of different sites with info. Looks like the Topo to LaPaz ferry leaves at 10 PM. Bring tie downs. Prices seem to be in pesos. Don't know the exchange rate yet. Let ya know when I learn more.
