Best 650 dual purpose?

I'm looking for a dual purpose bike and have heard many good stories about the KLR. How does it compare with the legandary GS650 an the Honda Transalp? Will a be able to spend 2 days on the road with it because its looks like a very offroad bike...

As for the BMW being compared to the KLR, I don't think anyone even tries to compare them. Like comparing an SUV to a pickup. The KLR isn't as fancy but has far more utility and is better off road overall. Although the 08' has made the KLR more road acceptable to many. Friends and I did a ride from Ohio to Montana and down to Colorado. John rode his 06' KLR and did just fine cruising along at 80mph on I-90 through SD as well as through the mountains. Hope that helps

I rode my KLR650 to the BMWMOA Rally in Lima, OH a few years ago. 500 miles each way, plus a bunch of riding around while there, and I was comfortable the entire time..

Oh, and my 2000 R1100R was sitting at home the entire time, as was my buddy's R1100R since he rode his KLR, too..

This is what I left at home (and later sold)

This is what I rode to the rally, and the photo was taken just before leaving..

The BMW is long gone, but that KLR was ridden by me last weekend.

Nice pics Paper!

I went to some local dealers today and realised how little I know about bikes!
the new KLR looks very nice and the Transalp is too bulky and "onroad" for my needs.Anybody here own a Yamaha XT660? Its the first time i've ever seen one but i like it alot but its expensive(R66000) campared to the KLR(R48900)! What makes me scared is the fact that i've never heard anybody talk about it! Sooo there's 3 bikes left to choose from...KLR, Yamaha XT and the GS650.

I think the XT gets good reviews, but I'm not sure if it's available here in the States..

By the R48900, I'm guessing you're in RSA? Yeah, that's pretty pricey for a KLR.. If it helps, I have a few hundred Rand sitting in a box in my closet from my last trip to South Africa..

Speaking of that, I won the Coca Cola Lottery in South Africa today!! Twice!! Stupid email scammers..

Yeah, I've only see one XT660 here in the states once and it came from Europe. Nice looking bike and very off-road capable. So again it becomes a decision on what you will ride most of the time. Mostly on road with 30% off, 08' KLR. While I'd rate the XT as a 50/50 bike. I wouldn't think the XT would be as good for long rides on road as the '08 KLR.
I own a '06 KLR and '07 V-strom dl1000. The KLR is my off road "ride it there" bike. It'll go through anything the way it's set up now! The "V" is my on road, through the city, long distance tour, gravel road or packed dirt road bike. I often judge a bike by the amount of breakable plastic piece on it. The more breakable pieces the more of an on road bike it is.

I have put almost 37,000 miles on my 04 KLR. Two trips from KY to FL, and one to the left coast. The KLR can do it all!

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.
