Spare Key

Hi all Frank from Jacksonville. Passed my MSF yesterday. Already had the KLR650 2014.5. Quick question here. Like an idiot, I lost my key. The bike came with another key that has a metal tag with a number on it. The owner's manual say that if I need another key to contact the dealer and let them order it for me. Can I just get a copy made of this key so that I can have a spare? Thanks!
In regards to the class; it was great, with the exception of one incident. The guy in front of me grabbed his brakes in a corner. He hit hard at 10 MPH. He broke ankle and some other bone in his leg. I guess this kind of shocked me. He screamed until the ambulance got there (20 mins). I know that riding two wheels comes with risk, but I was caught off guard of how much damage one could do at 10 MPH. Thanks guys! P.S. No one else touched the front brake in a curve for the rest of the class.

I had an extra key cut at the local hardware store.

Order blanks from your local kawai dealer and then have a hardware shop cut the key profile using your spare.

If you've lost keys completely, you're not likely to have much luck (at least here in the Atlanta area... including Kawasaki motors corporate). Kawasaki dealers are avoiding ordering keys based on key code due to their concerns of potential theft. Personally, I just find them lazy and adolescent.

However, I did have success from keys4uride online. I gave him the key code and had a new key within a week.

And for the record, I didn't loose the key... the previous owner lost the only key he had and says he's ordered a replacement from the dealer... and still waiting... and 3 weeks have gone by since then.

Kawasaki dealers will try and sell you a new key set which includes the ignition, gas cap and helmet lock for $160+/-. But how to get the gas cap off when it takes a key to unlock it? guess they didn't think of that. I've heard the other option is to find a locksmith. For me, i was pleased at the service and response of keys4uride.

Just offering some experience from a guy who's been there already.

A locksmith is your friend. When I lost my last polaris atv key I removed the lock and took it to a locksmith shop,he cut a new key from the lock. Price was way, way less than Polaris.

Definitely get a copy made. If your local locksmith doesn't have a blank you can get one on ebay for just a few bucks.
